Re: Week one post game thread

Overshown and Hooker will be out in the Dallas game. Two solid guys on that not very impressive defense. Our offense has to get its act together.

Re: Week one post game thread

Conerly played left tack in college and was a 1st round pick. I wonder why they won't put him at LT.

Coleman apparently allowed a ton of pressures. Maybe he was a back-up last year for a reason.

And Allegretti is also not a starting caliber player. We don't have 5 starting caliber players available on the o-line and that is a shame.

I'd like to try: Conerly, Paul, Allegretti (no other choice), Cosmi, Wylie against Dallas. Won't happen, but I would like to see it.

Re: Week one post game thread

Well, I assume they’re sticking with the currently lineup barring injury. And no indication they’re looking to add anyone. There are still a few guys out there (but only a few and they’re either getting long in the tooth or have had only mixed success):

Taylor Decker (OT): High-profile veteran left tackle available on the market.
Cam Robinson (OT): Experienced starting tackle who remains unsigned.
Kevin Zeitler (G): Highly-rated veteran interior blocker.
Mekhi Becton (G/OT): Former first-round pick with flexibility across the line.
Joel Bitonio (G): Longtime Browns veteran whose status has included potential retirement considerations.
Graham Glasgow (G/C): Versatile interior presence with extensive starting experience.

I doubt they do anything here and the only one I’d be intrigued by is Decker.

Re: Week one post game thread

My views on the game:

Defense is clearly going to be giving up some big plays this season. That appears to be the nature of their assertiveness. Philly has a veteran crew with loads of play makers but a new system. I'll be curious to see this defense against a more established offensive system.

Sonny Styles learned through the game. In first half on a rush he showed to much deference to Saquan. Second half he realized he is the bigger human and plowed him over. Love to see the learning take place.

Blough needed to make adjustments sooner. Philly would drop 7 into coverage but he would only put 3 targets out there. That isn't going to cut it. He did adjust and even began to increase frequency of Jayden into shotgun as game moved on. It's been a long time since we've had an offense willing to adapt to the game.

Jayden threw the ball away which I loved to see. This is the way.

I'm not as down on the o-line as many. They gave up pressures 50% of time but Jayden also had more time to through the ball than any other qb at 3.41 seconds. Even when accounting for heavy roll outs and broken plays they gave him 3.27 seconds which is far more than any other QB in week 1 and they did that against a Fangio defense.

Re: Week one post game thread

Jayden looked like someone that now fully understands how his health is the most important thing to our team. I don't think he took even 1 unnecessary hit the entire game. That was definitely good to see.

Go sign Decker and start him at left or right tackle. He is an upgrade over Coleman. Assuming he is staying in shape.

Re: Week one post game thread

I've hung on and cogitated. I expected the O to have problems after the injury and depth shenanigans, notably C, and the 1st half had me worried. 2nd half was a different showing. Yes, play calling was too conservative especially given we really had nothing to lose by trying stuff. I'm betting Blough has been re-thinking that 2pt call the last 2 days. But there are good signs. The running game is there or thereabouts, and once they work out how to get Scary, Diggs and Williams the ball more often and maybe stretch D's, then the passing game will catch up.

D played far better than I expected, though that does not apply to Mikey. Styles looks the real deal; that bulldozing of Berkley was glorious. He just needs to keep his head screwed on, as despite the fact it was a false start (WTF are the officials looking at?), you can't abandon the play just because you think there should be a flag.

ST's were up and down, but Owens deserves a speical mention. This play was fantastic https://www.youtube.com/shorts/xxqt3mW8Zfk. If he could replicate that level of play on D...

Re: Week one post game thread

I'm a little late to this thread, but here we go anyways.

Defense showed major improvement over last year, but still plenty of room for improvement - the big plays killed us, like Hurts scrambling for 22 on 3rd and 18, obviously the big passes and td's as well.

But there was stuff to like on the defensive side as well - we got good pressure on Hurts at times, one highlight reel sack from Sonny that shut everyone who doubted him in preseason up. Run defense was really improved too, we had more TFL in this game than I felt like we had all last year. Felt like guys were swarming to the ball too. We just need to fix the errors we had and it will be a capable unit. And we need Trey Amos back in the worst way too.

Offensively it took time for them to gel, and there is a lot that remains to be seen, but I thought JD had a solid game. He took what was out there, not his fault if receivers can't get open, Blough adjusted in the second half. Offensive line remains a concern, but it probably will all year tbh.

And Tress Way is still the MVP. 36 years old and he still is an asset to the team. Hope he doesn't retire but if he does hats off to a great career.

Also Drew Stevens needs to be better. 4 points off the board there

Not sure you can blame him for the blocked kick, but the missed FG was well wide and not in a super pressure situation. He needs to get that out of his system else we'll be trying out kickers again.

It was a 54-yarder. Those aren't automatic with any kicker in the league. We obviously picked him for leg strength and accuracy, and the missed kick had plenty of distance. He also made a 55-yarder in the game. If he starts missing more of these than making them, that's a real concern. But too small a sample size to conclude anything at this point. And as between our OL and secondary, Stevens is the least of our worries.

I wouldn't mind swapping in Rasul Douglas for Sainristil (or maybe even moving Sainristil to the slot where he's been better if you want to retain his ball-hawking skills). Robertson (who had a great game) and Douglas may be a better combo, and we will face better WRs and a better QB the Sunday than last Sunday (although a weaker running game). Something needs to be done.

I'd also consider swapping in Quan Martin for Reaves at least some of the time; I love Reaves, and using him in doses is OK, but he played 100% of the snaps and was a beat slow in coverage, I thought. Martin has had his issues, of course, but he seems to have turned a corner, and I'd at least want to see what we have there. It seems like he did well in limited usage on Sunday.

I don't know how we get improvement in the OL with our current personnel. Perhaps we see improvement by the mere fact that we're not playing the Eagles again anytime soon, as their DL remains one of the best. I sure hope so. Cosmi was a stud, and Conerly played well too. But outside of those guys....

Can't blame him for that blocked kick.

Re: Week one post game thread

I'm torn on that blocked kick, Jalen Carter is a kick blocking machine, but did Stevens play a part by hitting the trajectory too low? On a standard extra point the angle should be high enough that it won't matter how high the DT jumps.

Right or wrong the kicker is always going to get the majority blame for a miss. They're out there for a handful plays each game with one job.

Regarding the missed FG it is a small sample size but league average from beyond 50 is 70% so not really a surprise it was a miss, however he was way off the mark.

I'm more peeved about the block than the miss.

We can't hit on a 2nd round pick and we are ever searching for a consistent kicker. My confidence level in him is a 0. 55 is the new 50. 1 of 2 isn't good enough.
