Cap Casualties in offseason

But why trade him now??? The timing just doesnt seem favorable at all...huge cap hit+not top trade value cause he hasnt been healthy. I say keep him...but thats just me i guess.

I agree with you that it's a bad time to get rid of him because we'll have to eat a cap hit in the realm of $12 million. And I agree that he doesn't come with top trade value right now. The problem is that he clearly doesn't want to be here. Maybe something will change and he and Gregg Williams can work things out, but right now Williams doesn't seem to like Lavar too much.

I tend to trust Gregg Williams, if he thinks Lavar doesn't follow the script enough, then we're better off without him. Might as well get something for him if Gregg Williams thinks he'll be of little use to the Redskins.

The thing is, Arrington is due a $6 million roster bonus in the offseason. The only way the Skins would pay him that money is if he restructures his deal, which would mean we'd be committing ourselves for another few years in terms of the salary cap. I don't see Gregg Williams making that committment to Lavar.

Lavar is supposed to count $12 million against our cap next year if he's on the team. If we cut him post June 1, he'll count $5 million in 2006 and $7 million in 2007. So that would save us $7 million in 2006, but we'd carry $7 million in dead money in 2007.

If we cut/traded him before June 1, he'll count $12 million in 2006 as dead money. So in that scenario he'd count $12 million whether here or gone.

Cutting/trading him post-June 1 seems most likely. I can't see Gregg Williams making the committment.
