It's an arcane rule that needs to be changed. Why doesn't that come up in the owner meetings? |

Redskins | Patten discusses new wide receiver additions
Sun, 4 Jun 2006 10:12:52 -0700 David Elfin, of the Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins WR David Patten discussed the additions of WR Antwaan Randle El and WR Brandon Lloyd during the offseason. Patten said, "That said to me, 'Maybe D.P. is getting older. Maybe he doesn't have it anymore. Maybe D.P.'s not the answer,'? I have to prove every day that D.P. still has it. All the so-called experts are counting me out, but the cameras [that tape the ongoing organized team activities] don't lie. Our coaches know what D.P. is capable of doing." Head coach Joe Gibbs called Patten after signing those two players and told him he would play the best guy. Patten has no problems backing up Lloyd or Randle El if they prove to be better than him. Patten isn't mad and he won't be cut...and for some reason he talks in the 3rd person |

Re: Charles Robinson says Patten is most likey to be cut
I don't see any reasons to cut Patten now if we don't need the cap space (which I'm pretty sure we don't). He played a considerable amount on 3 Super Bowl Championship teams, and has proved to be a quality reciver in the league. He's not a super-star, but he's a guy who can make contributions, no doubt about it. If he gets beat out during training camp, then do whatever. However, I don't see the point in cutting a guy who could make contributions before seeing what he could do. If we needed the cap space to sign guys, this would be a different argument, but I personally would like to see Patten stay on at least until training camp.

Patten should be kept for depth. If he really thinks he'll be making significant contributions in this WR corps, he's fooling himself.
However, if he's cut....does anyone know the cap hit? Could this maybe mean we're freeing up space for Seau? |

I'm not sure any such players are available at this point, even Seau. I question how much of an upgrade he is over Clemons, McIntosh, and Holdman. But that's a discussion for the other thread. Patten represents solid, veteran depth for us. If Moss or ARE get injured, he's the same type of receiver and can step in and run the same style of plays. I'd only cut him if we could get a good offensive lineman for depth, and then an improvement somewhere else too. Patten is more valuable than us Redskin fans are giving him credit for, IMO. We saw his performance last year, and somehow that made us all forget what he was able to do in New England. He can still be a big-play guy. Supposedly he was hurting since week 2 last season. Brunell was hurting the season before last, and look what he was able to do last season. Let's give Patten a chance, it's still entirely possible that he's our 2nd or 3rd best receiver.

Re: Charles Robinson says Patten is most likey to be cut
once patten went down, moss's numbers dropped dramatically as did RB receiving yardage. I'd much rather see him out there again than farris or jacobs.
