Skins notes from ESPN.com NFL chat today w/Gary Horton

2 questions, one direct. Nothing too exciting, but there's not a ton of news going around so here ya go:

Mark (Richmond, VA)
Gary, I'm a huge Redskins Fan, but I am disappointed in the receivers we obtained this offseason. Yes, they are better than what we had, but there is still no HEIGHT!!! With Sam Madison, Will Peterson, Terrance Newman, Anthony Henry, Lito Sheppard, and Sheldon Brown twice a year, do you think the 06-07 Smurfs can get the job done??? I feel this is the weakest spot on the team!!!
GARY HORTON
I would totally disagree with you, because I love what the Redskins have done in the offseason. They wiil feature a base set that has 3 WRs with Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El and Brandon Lloyd. And I think we've seen that with the new contact rules in the NFL, small receivers are very much en vogue again. I love cornerbacks that like to bump and run, but the rules don't allow them to push receivers all over the field. And these little guys will get off the jam and separate, and this will be a great Redskins passing attack, in my opinion.

Jason (ATX)
Hey Gary thanks for taking time to answer my question. Who do you think will have the Best D in the NFL this year? Do you think Steve Smith can/will put up numbers like last year (since teams will have to keep an eye on KJ)? If so shouldnt he be the leagues MVP?
GARY HORTON
If we're talking about defense, why not stay in Carolina. They added depth to their D-Line and they'll be great. I also like the defenses in Dallas, Washington and Pittsburgh off the top of my head. To answer your question about Smith, I think he'll be as good as he was a year ago and maybe even better because Keyshawn will take away double teams and will do the dirty work over the middle. It will be very difficult for defenses to roll their coverages toward Smith's side like they have in the past. This is the first time he's had a complementary receiver and it should really help him.

I'd rather have speed and talent over height. We have plenty of speed and talent.

Michael Westbrook was a tall receiver...yeah, that worked out well.

As a former 5'6" basketball player...I know you don't need height to suceed in sports.

(no offense), but you're doing well in the nba, right?

all i care about in my WRs is that they:
1. get open
2. catch the ball

nothing else matters. JJ or santana do it differently, but as long as it works...

I can make it simpler than that, just catch the ball.

Re: Skins notes from ESPN.com NFL chat today w/Gary Horton

Height in a WR is important for the corner fade route, That is it! Jumping ability makes up for height and Brandon Lloyd has that. He can run the corner fade. Tenacity counts for a lot and Steve Smith has that. Michael Irvin had height and he could not get open without pushing off. Height is over rated. Will Peterson, Anthony Henry and Terrence Newman?! I agree with Malcom, who are these guys anyway?

Just wait for a Cowboys fan to log on. They'll make SURE they let you know EXACTLY who they are and how apparently no one ever threw Terrence Newman's way, blah blah blah. And when they do, I'll put up my .gif of him getting his ass run over. And Anthony Henry was a non-factor in all the games the Skins played him in.

Yeah I actually think Mark from Richmond is a Boys fan in disguise, I have yet to meet someone who thinks WR's are the "weakest part of our team"

hahaha yeah no kidding, maybe he just got tired of the same old knocks about the skins with the quaterback stuff and everything. And another thing why dont any of these sports writers ever include or db's in yhere columns id say sean springs is a pretty good corner but with carlos rogers stepping up in his second year, i think he could possibly have been the best last year of the corners picked in the first round of 05, packman jones and antrelle rolle.
