mp3 players?

I'm looking to pick one up, I don't really want to spend more than $100, anybody have any suggestions?

well, the best is clearly the ipod, but i personally use a phillips expanium (version 1, which was 100$ on sale 5-6 years ago) and have been using it ever since. Get a CD player that'll play mp3 cds... 200 songs per cd and 10-12 hour battery life makes it a good choice. Best buy often has under 40$ ones that do mp3s and sometimes FM radio as well... the skip protection on mp3s is over 100 seconds. Get a good set of head phones though, most players come with ten cent crap.

I have a sony MP3 MD player. Holds a decent amount per disc, fairly small. It's not an iPod, but it's a decent player.

what's the big deal about ipods? The amount of memory?

no, the overall experience... everything about them is just amazing (I bought one for my dad after looking over all the cheaper alternatives and not finding anything remotely close)... the interface, the ease of use, the add ons (griffin tech's itrip to use the ipod wirelessly with any fm radio is truly killer), etc... battery life is good and it can even hold a month straight of music... and you can select songs by artist/album/title, finding the right song is really fast, and the size, feel and look of the thing is top notch too... and it has an address book and various other pda functions, so it can be written off as a business expense legally

if you're more of a geek and don't mind something bulkier, the neuros does ogg, can record to wav or mp3, gets radio (and can record it), and can also find out the name/artist etc of a song with a small sample of that song, and i believe you can re-write the menus yourself in xml or whatever (all without add ons)... but its bigger, doesn't look quite as nice, and isnt as easy to use...

if you're not looking at that price range, its either a compact flash based player (with 256mb or less storage) or a CD plaer that does mp3 (700mb per disc, disc are easy to carry around)... the minidisc mp3 players are much smaller if the discman size is too big, but i believe MD only holds 450mb or so and sony is much more copy right friendly seeing as how they're also in the music/media business.

How much music can a player hold with say 256mb?

I'd love to get an ipod, but for the amount of use I'd get out of it I just can't justify spending that much. I'm just looking for something to listen to for the occasional trip. And since I only travel a few times a year spending $300 doesn't make a lot of sense.

right, 256mb holds about 65 songs... but it'll probably cost more than a cheap mp3 cd player with the cassette adapter for a car... and unlike an md or cd player, you need a computer to change out the tunes, instead of popping in a new disc...

and yeah, unless you use them a lot, an ipod doesn't make sense... my dad does a lot of traveling for his job though, and he loves it for long trips.

So an mp3 cd player will play mp3 files without them having to be converted to .wav files? A 700mb CD could hold a ton of MP3's.

right, 200 songs per cd, and cd-rs are like 6 cents each on sale...
if you aren't looking to spend ipod money, its really the best way to go.

54$, mp3/wma cds, displays full ID3 info (title, artist, album etc), 20 hours battery life... and my experience with phillips is that its pretty reliable/well built.

Parking Lot
