When will Sean Taylor be in camp?

I say good for the NFL. This whole rookie symposium thing is supposed to be a reality check. These guys have to realize they're professionals now, and they have to start conducting themselves as such. Anybody who blows off the mandates of their employer is going to suffer the consequences, and these guys should not be exempt. Keep bumping up the fine until there's 100% attendance.

As for Mr. Taylor, I hope this wakes him from the stupor he seems to have been in for the past 3 months. He needed a swift kick in the ass, and the NFL gave it to him.

what u said is true but if u have to be somewhere else, u gotta be somewhere else. I say just fine him maybe 5grand and make him go again next year for the whole thing. I mean the guy is still pretty much a kid who didn't have an agent, like the other players do, looking out for him. We still don't know why he went w/o an agent for so long and the reason could be innane or it could be because he wanted to make sure he found someone he trusted for instance if rosenhaus(sp?) had done something to cause taylor to make him question his own agent.

all in all I think this is bs cuz he only missed one day because he needed to get his stuff out of his apartment before getting evicted. I mean Ron Dayne, coming into the league as the Heisman trophy winner, didn't even bother to come for any of the rookie lectures and yet he still got the regular fine.

I could see the nfl maybe raising the fine but not 2.5 times the previous highest fine for someone who only missed one third of the event.

thing is this is real life, come prepared or don't play

he honestly should have had some forewarning before getting evicted (like 2 months, it takes forever to kick someone out), and I'm not sure who would kick out a top 5 pick knowing all the money they'd have in short order... this whole rookie symposium is to tell them about their priorities and keeping on top of things, some stuff he obviously needed to hear more about, but he might have missed that part

don't mean to sound harsh, but its not like he didnt know about this or have no warning about being evicted (if that actually happened), and him not having an agent watching out for him for 3 months is his fault, not the league's...

Exactly, That Guy. It's not like his landlord would have suddenly decided to evict the kid without some kind of previous, and most likely repeated, warning. It's pretty clear Taylor was procrastinating in tying up whatever loose ends needed his attention, and that's precisely the kind of irresponsible and immature behavior that this symposium is intended to reduce.

The thing is, a lot of these kids are big-time primadonnas, who have become accustomed to a lifestyle wherein the rules don't apply to them, and anything that is considered a nuisance-- such as a mandatory symposium-- is simply brushed aside. That kind of attitude is what gets so many professional athletes into trouble, and that's why the league is taking such a hardline approach to dealing with it.

Taylor should have had his personal affairs in order well in advance of the symposium, and if he had a pressing matter which needed his attention, he should have notified the league and the team of the situation, and obtained their permission to leave. He did neither, and therefore the fine is more than justified.

It hit me exactly the same when I heard about his fine - seemed extremely steep for ONE day, compared to much less for missing the entire "show". But, we don't know what transpired when he left. And the others were a few years ago. Fines tend to grow in the NFL. God knows, the SALARIES do, so if the fines are going to mean anything, they have to also.

in norway (i think, forget which country exactly) speeding ticket fines are based on your annual income (because they figure richer people wouldn't be detered otherwise), and some people have been hit with fines of up to 440,000 (USD equivalent)... I know a lot of people around here that drive on HOV with only 1 person, and expect to be caught at least once or twice a year, but continue to do so, because the fines aren't big enough compared to saving 10 minutes everyday.

I understand football is his job and the symposium was mandatory and I never said I that taylor waiting so long to pick an agent was the nfl's fault but was instead his own. But with all that being said, as well as the stuff about inflation, I still think it's too much. He should have to pay some type of fine but not $25,000 and he should have to go to next years lectures. It's not like he went out partying and did drugs or anything that day he missed out of the three. Plus I've known people who got evicted with less than a weeks notice with no prior complaints so its not like it doesn't happen. This guys going through a huge change in his life and there r other ways of solving a problem like this without beefing up an already sizeable fine. I mean isn't this fine close to 3 times what some players have been fined for illegal hits that caused or intended to cause another player serious harm?

Maybe so, but what does somebody have to do (or not do) to get evicted without notice? It just doesn't add up-- this guy wouldn't be getting evicted without notice when he's set to be a millionaire in a few short weeks (and you can't tell me his landlord wouldn't have known that!), unless there was some kind of serious or repeated violation of his lease agreement. Oh I definitely know about that,lol, and agree that if he really was evicted then there had to be atleast a 95% chance he'd done something to warrant a speedy eviction notice. I just feel that a fine that is several times more than those given to some players for illegal hits is a bit overboard. Plus technically he isn't an employee of the NFL yet right?

I see your point, and I can attest to the trouble college kids get into with their landlords, having been in the situation before myself. I just feel that the NFL is justified in fining these exorbitant sums for players leaving a mandatory league symposium that they knew they had to attend well in advance, and that the fines are commensurate with the severity of the violation and the level of compensation the players receive.

According to the Post, the maximum amount possible for the fine was raised from $10,000 to $50,000 in 2003. Therefore, IMO, it's irrelevant what previous players got. He got half the maximium, and hopefully it will help him learn a lesson.
I just hope they get him signed, and he is in camp Day 1.

they sure do have their priorities in check in the NFL don't they

I'm all for helping rookies get their heads straight and teaching about the pitfalls of money and fame but this is a bit of overkill to be fining kids who r finally getting paid for what they've been doing for the past 6-7 years that much money.
