I'm glad someone else caught that, I was beginning to think I'd imagined it....

Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
im really suprised no one has mentioned "the fits" yet. if i had to hear those idiots talk one more time about "the fits" on the line. and how you have to fit in the fits, and avoid the fits, and move the fits. please tell me im not the only one that was going crazy as they dragged this topic over almost three quarters!!

Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
I listened to Sonny, Sam and Michaels and I was disgusted with the engineer of the game. Granted the fan noise was phenomenal but on all 3 Moss touchdowns I could not hear what happened after the catch because of the crowd noise. Also I'd like to have these guys replaced with John Riggins and Doc Walker.

Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
Randy Cross is a putz, Dick is aging, so he needs someone else to help him out. Randy Cross is not that guy.
Is it that hard to find good sportscasters?

Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
I wonder if there was something wrong with the mic system because where we were sitting the audio sounded muffled, sort of like Charlie Brown's teacher. A couple of times after the ref finished, we we're like "OK, we'll take your word for it."

Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
Enberg was the top man at NBC for so long that his voice says "big game" for me. I like the emotion that he brings in on big plays. He also did Super Bowl 17 (with Merlin Olsen?) which sticks in my brain. I guess I am getting old, too.
Randy Cross is actually not as bad as he used to be, if you can believe that. Whe he first started it was like being waterboarded. The worst case of ex-jock syndrome in history. If you look at the games, most of the announcers are terrible, which I find unbelievable when you consider the money involved in NFL broadcasting rights. Joe Buck is good. When he does Redskins games he sounds like he ONLY does Redskins games, which is a tribute to his preparation. He knows all the backups and is hip to all the local chatter surrounding the team. Whe he sees #46 for us he knows its Betts and he is ready to rattle off what his role is and has been, how we use him, etc. Part of that is technology and being of a generation that is used to it. I'm sure Buck is very quick with the laptop. Other than him, it's pretty dismal. Even Madden gets under my skin these days. If you want an example of an announcer being unobjective, listen to the two Cowboys/Redskins games from this year and last. He was crushed last year when we won. On Santana's second score he just said, "Unbelievable" (in a disappointed way). It was all about the Cowboys losing the game rather than the Redskins making great plays to win it. This year he gave his little spiel about how the Redskins "just aren't very good". He had us dead and buried in week 2. I think he's still a little pissed about that alumni game in 1964.

Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
I was at the game so I didn't have to listen to Cross but he is without a doubt one of the top 3 worst announcers in sports.

Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
everyone hates every announcer. i generally don't pay attention to them. how much announcing does CBS/Fox need besides the NFL? that's why they suck, there's only 16 days of work and NO ONE tunes in because of the announcers. Micheals is the best ever (miracle on ice, ali, etc etc - he's done EVERYTHING), but beyond that only aikman really comes to mind.
larry micheals is terrible and whoever wanted to hear riggins and doc instead - john riggins is okay, but not great. doc sucks on games (i've heard him do some college stuff). jaws and dick vermeil are probably the best guys that aren't in a regular rotation. working for espn though, you won't see they very often at all. |

Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
I was a big fan of Verne Lundquist and Dan Fouts in the early 90's. Mike Patrick and Paul what's his name were good too.
College seems to have great announcers. Herbstreit, Fowler, Brent Musberger are all good. But for some reason announcers in the NFL suck out loud. |
