Question Coaches Conference

I think what Joe Gibbs has to do at this juncture is to get both Gregg Williams and Al Saunders together and have a meeting. At this meeting he'll ask the team whether they want to be pure power team which means pounding the ball with portis (and betts when portis is knicked) and building more passion on defense to stop teams, or if they want to be a team that airs it out and scores more points then the opponent because the defense can't stop anybody. Right now it seems like we'd have to go to the second option because right now the defense is horrid even with our starters in there we can't stop anybody. I think Rogers coming back from injury won't change anything. Griffin coming back will make the run defense a bit better, but won't change the entire defense. Brunell has struggled but the o-line has got to start to block if we want to run on teams and be able to get passes off. Something has to happen quick because this was a formidible team a year ago coming down the home stretch, and things should of only changed for the better? So, what the hell happened?

Re: Coaches Conference

Start a fire with the 700 page play book!

Or maybe take a few pages from the Old Gibbs I era playbook, and cut the fat out of the present book! Between CP, Betts, and TJ, we should be pounding, pounding, pounding opponents, because God knows, MB can't see but one side of the field, and can't throw like he did several years ago.

Re: Coaches Conference

I'm certain Coach Joe meets with them regularly. I hope that he does not ask them 'what do we need to do' questions.

I hope Coach Joe lays out the goals he wants to accomplish this week, seeks their input on coordination strategies, and then gives firm direction on implementation strategy.

Coach Joe has hand chosen these coaches because of their specific talents and work ethic; they have his trust. I am certain that Coach Joe does not feel that he must try to teach a dog how to scratch fleas.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall and see what these guys talk about. See who runs what. It's a bit muddled as far as who controls what in the team and it would be interesting.

Re: Coaches Conference

Here's how I would guess things go. Each coach has a pretty fair amount of say and autonomy over their units. Gibbs is the captain of the entire ship and has the final say in things, but I think overall each unit is run pretty tightly by Williams, Saunders, and Smith, with guys like Bugel also have a pretty significant say in things.

As for the coaches needing to get together I'm pretty sure they have been burning some serious midnight oil trying to get this figured out. If things don't turn around this year it won't be for a lack of effort and hard work, that's for sure.

Re: Coaches Conference

Sure, they have a great deal of autonomy and get a great deal of respect from Gibbs, but Gibbs does have a responsibility to hold them accountable for the results.

Re: Coaches Conference

Do you have reason to believe it is other than that? Nobody's job is more tenuous than an NFL coach
