Redskins Style Football

The last few weeks it seems as though the team has been playing what is called "Redskins Style Football" I would define this as: an offense that controls the clock witha strong rushing attack, a physical defense that can stop even the most potent offense and a strong special teams game. The last few weeks we have seen this for the most part.

The offense is running the ball especially well, the passing game is in a transition period but improving. The defense has struggled and they aren't necessarily stopping people flat out but they are slowing down offenses and forcing teams to throw. The special teams has been solid esp. on kickoff returns. It was the same way this time last year on the playoff run but a much stronger defense.

My question is why does this team seem to find its indentity late in the season? Last year it took until the record was 5-6 to realize its time to get back to basics and run the ball and have the defense control the tempo. This year has been an overall struggle but you can't help but notice the team is looking similar to the end of last year. It seems as though they want to be something else. Why not just accept who you are and play that way from the beginning? This team has a clear identity but they seem afraid to show it.

Nice post. I broke it up into paragraphs so it was easier to read.

I think last year was a bit different because they started strong then swooned before bouncing back. This year they were flat from the start

Paragraphs are much better. I had to get my thoughs together quickly. But of you look back to the Redskins first 4 games last year when they went 3-1, it seemed as though they still lacked the mentality that they have late.
-In the opener they only put up 9 points, all field goals although Portis ran well aginst a good D.
-Against Dallas in week 2 you have to admit it was pathetic until Moss lit them up
-Aganst Seattle, the defense let Seattle back into the game they controlled and the offense and Moss pulled them out in OT.

I think those games, although wins, and they did build confidence, they lacked the crucial parts that showed up at the end of the season this and last year.

I'd love to think that the Redskins invented that philosophy, but if you listen to every coach in the league, they all want to win the same way: Run the ball, play stout defense, and smart special teams.

It's not that the Redskins don't want to play this way, or that they haven't "found their identity", (which is quickly becomming a annoying cliche), it's very simple; they do not have the ability to play that way.

Look at the stats from the last 3 games. They DO have the ability to play that way.

I think it's obvious they can play that way, Saunders seems to get away from that at times for whatever reason. The best thing we can do especially with a young QB is pound the ball, and pound it some more.

I think over the past three weeks they have done a fantastic job of running the football. The problem is that they are not converting these drives into TOUCHDOWNS! That will come with time as people put 8-9 in the box to stop the power running game and JC becomes more comfortable with the play action in the redzone.

I think a lot of the redzone problems come from having such an inexperienced QB. They're probably pretty limited in what plays they run as it is, and things only tighten up more inside the 20.

JC is pretty quick to throw it away at times which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but once they open up the offense more as he gains more experience some of those throwaways should turn into TDs.
