Re: Smoot for Archuletta?
Smoot was a serviceable-to-decent #2, but there were times when he got spread open and buttered.
Still, I'll take a flawed Fred Smoot over any of the dopes we have now. |

Re: Smoot for Archuletta?
I was always behind the decision not to resign Smoot. He wasn't even close to deserving that kind of money. On the other hand I was all for the contracts to Arch and Lloyd so I give myself a D for evaluating those three hit or miss type of free agents. After breaking his jaw I would say Smoot's career in Minny is done and if he is released hell no do we want that guy back! Not a team player oh and he weighs like 167 ponds with his helmet and pads on while also holding a ten pound bag of weed. I'd rather keep Arch and of course as many have said no one trades for bums with massive Dan Snyder overinflated type contracts.

Smooty was serviceable as a cover corner, but a good tackler he was not. When it came to tackling he was much like his predecessor #21. He thought all there was to playing corner, was to cover, he often wound up injured when he attempted to tackle. Had he been better at that element of his game, the team would have been willing to pay him what he was looking to get in a new contract. I would take him for AA though, if Minnesota would take his contract too.

Re: Smoot for Archuletta?
I think bringing Smoot back would be a lift for this D, which by all accounts has sufferred from a lack of chemistry among other things. Smoot was popular among players & did bring a certain enthusiasm to the game. He was a starter on the best D (04) this team has had in many years.
The espn article said that Minn. might cut him, but I haven't seen anything substantive about how it would impact their cap, which would be the deciding factor. anyone have info on how it would affect their cap? |

Re: Smoot for Archuletta?
Smoot isn't coming back. We let him walk for a reason, he's not a typical Gregg Williams DB.

I disagree about him not being a GW type cb, he played very physically in 04, of course it was his contract year. He jammed recievers & played tough man coverage, & tackled fairly well that year. I think we let him go for the same reason we let Pierce go, they thought they were expendable & not worth signing for that much $. Minnesota only outbid the Skins by $1 Mil. & structured his deal so he got more in the early years. We definitely tried to re-sign him. I doubt he'll be back simply because we'll be looking to upgrade & he's not the best available. |

Re: Smoot for Archuletta?
If the DBs this year are examples of a "Gregg Williams DB," we are in for a hellish few season.

Re: Smoot for Archuletta?
We had the #3 defense with Smoot as the other DB. If he is available we should go after him. He is a vocal leader and fits in the system. He won't demand the money he did when he left. Still, I think there is to much ego on this coaching staff to allow him back.
