Gibbs defends Heyer

Well, looks like the hit on Jason Campbell isn't Heyer's fault.. So be careful who u guys (the ones who bashed on Heyer) re accusing as Gibbs said that it isn't his fault..

I am kinda disappointed in some of u guys because Heyer is free agent rookie for god's sake, u guys cannot expect him to be so good in games.. So please don't bash on him anymore.. Beside we found a raw gem, once we develop him, he can be good T or very good back-up one..

Re: Gibbs defends Heyer

If you are aware of Gibbs history, you know he will never publicy criticize his players. While Heyer may be good in time, our concern is here and now. If you saw the game, you can judge for yourself.

Re: Gibbs defends Heyer

Well it is kind of hard not to blame Heyer when 90% of the pressure is coming from the left side. Either Heyer is screwing up, or someone keeps missing an assignment.

I dont think anyone was blaming Heyer, really. I think the majority of the people, myself included, critizied the coaches for having an undrafted rookie FA going one on one when someone could have helped in pass coverage. I think everyone on this board is happy in what we found in Heyer...but lets not get ahead of ourselves, he's not yet a starting tackle in this league, although he seems like he has a world of potential.

Re: Gibbs defends Heyer

I just saw Gibbs shoot down La Canfora's Heyer post in the presser.

It reminded me of a pre-season interview that Steve Buckhants did with Gibbs in 1991. Buck was at Fox5 at the time and asked him about all the magazines that were picking the Redskins to win the Super Bowl. "Which magazines?" Gibbs asked sternly. Buckhants sheepishly replied, "Playboy Magazine." Says Gibbs angrily, (something like) "Well, I think that speaks for itself." The point is that once in a while the coach likes to give the press a little of the business.

Heyer has played well for a rookie and I think Gibbs didn't want that fact to get lost in an avalanche of "He got Campbell hurt" stories and insinuations. On another note, I think that it's interesting that Gibbs never came close to saying anything like this about the Tom Friend story last year. I think we can now assume that that story was essentially accurate.

Also, Gibbs denied any knowledge of trade talks regarding Brunell.

Re: Gibbs defends Heyer

It probably wasn't solely Heyer's fault, but more of a chemistry thing between he and Pucillo. I'm not sure I appreciate the fact that those two guys are protecting Campbell's blindside, especially if we have all our eggs in that one basket named Jason Campbell. I suppose if there were a better scenario out there that the coaching staff would use it. Perhaps the Heyer / Pucillo combination on the left side is the only answer right now. Doesn't make me feel very good going into the season knowing we have that type of depth. It doesn't matter who we have at QB if he's trying to throw from his back all day.

Re: Gibbs defends Heyer

I think they are trying to ramp up Heyer as quickly as possible, but is Jason Fabini so bad that Heyer deserves to start?? I can't wait until Samuels is back. Gibbs and Bugel are great at coachspeak, but I prefer listening to the anonymous execs from other teams to get real opinions. There is a reason Heyer went undrafted. No way in holy hell he's a starter. And we're in deep shit at left guard people. I wish we could get a damn lineman from Atlanta for Brunell.

I do not think that we're in as bad of a position at LG as you may think. I believe that when CS is back the LG position will be better just playing next to him. Remember that during the OTA's and Training Camp until Chris got hurt Tod Wade was learning next to Samuels. Remembering that the Oline needs to gel and have chemistry do not get bent out of shape due to their recent not so spectacular play.

As far as listening to other teams Execs about players. I do not buy into that. While a player might not look good for your club, doesn't mean that he will not perform for another. Case and point Jerimiah Trotter, Walt Harris, Fred Smoot etc etc etc. You can even look at the many late round picks, and UFA's that blow up, because somebody else didn't see anything in them. I am not about to develop that list. I would like to point out that our coaches see something in the kid and only time will tell what caliber he truly is. Right now however it is obvious that he is a project.

Re: Gibbs defends Heyer

I think JLC is an idiot, for his article bashing Gibbs. I was shocked that he made such a big deal about Heyer's play. It was one play. Thats what the defense gets paid to do. I think the fact that Heyer is playing, is the best thing that has happened to the Redskins in a long time. We are deep at tackle. We alreaedy had one of the best offensive lines in the NFL and now we have the best tackle depth in the NFL. Wade is not playing gaurd. We will pick up a gaurd after the second round of cuts, to back up Puccillo. I still cant believe that JLC was so critical of Heyer, it was one play, that went wrong. I have seen it many times from Samuels and many others. I am glad Gibbs stood up to this stupidity.

There is no way we have the best tackle depth in the NFL.

Re: Gibbs defends Heyer

During this pre-season they've brought in three recievers and a Linebacker. Either they are confident in the line, or they are in full denial. We need to

1. Get Samuels back, and

2. Start running the ball the way we did last November/December.

I just won't accept the idea that Dockery was the keystone of that success.

Well I think Portis' return will not only help our running game but our pass protection as well.

Portis is a much, much better blocker than Betts. Betts is like a turnstile when he stays back to block on passing downs

JLC was doing his job which is to report information. He got quotes from another NFL executive. What was said in the article was very good information. It looked like Heyer and Puccillo were both to blame on the hit on JC.

After two games the o-line does not look very good. And the bottom line is we almost lost our qb for the year. When you have a journeymen at left guard, and a rookie FA at left tackle, and they are protecting JC's blindside, and that is where he is getting hit from, you are going to hear about it in the media. If you can't take the heat, then get out of the kitchen.

If you ask me, Joe Gibbs looks like the idiot worrying about what the media says. Who cares? I'd hate to see it if Gibbs coached in New York. He'd be doing 2 hour pressers everyday defending his players.

I don't think Gibbs looked like an idiot. I think he was standing up for his guys and he was also putting the press in it's place. La Canfora doesn't even get to watch practice, except for stretching. He's such an insider that he has to go to other teams to find sources. I like the fact that he took on the press in this case. It could lead to greater team unity. Gibbs is trying to get his team ready to play. Part of that is psychological. If he can use this as a tool to fire people up, then I say well done.
