Non-mainstream computer programs
I made this thread because I just downloaded Foxit Reader, and it is so much better than Adobe Reader because it takes up less space, less RAM, allows you to edit PDFs and is free.
I am sure many Warpathers know other sweet programs that are free and/or better than most mainstream ones. Another one I can think of is the web browser Firefox over IE. A lot less viruses, cleaner, and easier IMO. Any others?

Re: Non-mainstream computer programs
RealPlayer Alternative. We install it on all machines here. Doesn't give you all the BS that Real does...

Re: Non-mainstream computer programs
Thunderbird for email, 7-zip for compression, Ashampoo (when its free) for disc burning, Pidgin for IM, AVG Free for AV, and lots and lots of others that are not coming to me right now.
I still use MS Office, but OpenOffice is a viable alternative.

Re: Non-mainstream computer programs
Ah, good call TMC. I use both Real Alternative and QuickTime Alternative. Both free.
I also use VLC a lot, too.

Re: Non-mainstream computer programs
SourceForge.net: Welcome to SourceForge.net is a great place to get open source software. I use PDFCreator at home to print PDF files. Thanks for the head's up on Foxit Reader...
I use 7Zip, VLC, CDBurnerXP (great free burning software), theGIMP is a great free alternative to Photoshop, Inkscape is comparable to Adobe Illustrator.

Re: Non-mainstream computer programs
I use AVG, realplayer alternative, thunderbird, firefox, open office (some), messed around with GIMP (although I do like photoshop better,) VLC player, 7-zip, and others.
As far operating systems, I love Fedora Linux. Once you figure out how to install programs in Linux, you can just about find any add-on or plugin-in to do what you do in Windows. Of course, I am saying "almost". I think Microsoft continues to shoot themselves in the foot by bloating all of their software to the point to where you have to upgrade all of your hardware just so it will run.

Re: Non-mainstream computer programs
Anyone here do much video converting? I need to find a decent program that will convert pretty much every type of video file, especially FLV to MPEG.

Re: Non-mainstream computer programs
Avast AntiVirus.
Sunbird: Mozilla Calendar. If you like alternatives, Dual boot linux! You will have a blast. Fedora, OpenSuse and Ubuntu are good options. |
