I think a point that hasn't been mentioned yet, is that at his age, Mathis still has the whole immaturity excuse. You don't often see this kind of thing happening to vets, it's often the guys younger than 25.

Now that he's a Redskin, and he's near the psychological full maturity age, we have a chance to see if the past is really, actually behind him, or if he's just a full blown turd.

If it's the latter, he won't have a long stay here.



Now, from a football perspective, I'm not sure what they see in him that makes him worth the trouble of a 2nd chance. It's a no risk contract, but he's also had his most valuable returner years elsewhere, and though he's really fast, that doesn't make him a good receiver.

This is a low risk, low reward move, and hopefully, he doesn't put the team through the minor inconvenience of releasing him for off field reasons.
