What I See...

Through this difficult season so far we have been looking for things to get better. Why isn't Gibbs winning like we all thought he would? Why isn't our offense coming up with crushing victories like they used to? But one thing no one has asked yet is: why is this team falling apart, and they haven't for good reason; the team is sticking together.

Think about the hardest things you have gone through in your life. When you're going through them sometimes it seems like nothing good will ever come out of it, but then good things present themselves after you persevere. Let me give an example. When I was younger I had asthma. It was sports-related, which means that any time I started running or I tried to play any sport I would get short of breath, and whatever air did flow into my lungs felt like battery acid.

I never wanted to quit though. I played many sports: football, baseball, wrestling, and soccer to list a few. When I was younger I couldn't imagine being able to do that, but every day I played these sports with my friends before I ever made the high school teams. I remember running with them and playing against other kids from other neighborhoods, there were times when I felt like I couldn't do it. One time I couldn't even breathe and I was vomiting everywhere, but I remember my friends got me up, gave me some water, gave me some faith and then I went back out there. They stood by me and whenever something happened after that I stood by them.

We went through adversity together and nothing in life brings people together in quite the same way. Me and those same people I just talked about have now been friends for about 15 years now, and I'm only 20 years old.

Think about adverse situations: war, family issues, death. Nothing brings people together like these things. You battle together and you learn to trust each other in a way you never could otherwise. This is what is going on for the Redskins right now.

Adversity is never fun, nobody likes it, but it creates incredible things. Think back to Gibb's first season in the NFL, when the Redskins went 0-5. The guys there forged a bond that created an NFL dynasty. Many of these guys stayed with the team for years after, because they became part of a team, a brotherhood, you can even look at people who played for Gibb's back then when they do interviews now, and you can always see what that team meant to them.

Now, I can't say that this is what is happening now, but I can say that this is what can happen when guys come into a situation like this and they pull through it. They learn to trust the person next to them and that's what wins games when you really need them; that's what won the Redskin's 3 Super Bowls. Gibbs isn't the greatest coach of this era necessarily because he made the greatest play calls of this era, but because he taught his players things beyond the game, like loyalty, dedication, sacrifice, and a love for the game; those things will always make the difference.

nice post...and it echos what Gibbs himself said a couple of weeks ago at his press conference:

"What I try to tell the players is, we're looking for long-term and we're looking for a core group of guys. What are those kinds of guys? They're Redskins. When I say that, what's that mean? It means what's happening right now on our football team. A guy gets two shoulder stingers and goes back in and makes two of the biggest plays of the game. We have stories where the trainer tells a guy he shouldn't play and he turns around and two minutes later he's back in the game. We have those kinds of stories going on, and if you have the right kind of character, what you're looking for is that core group to build long-term tough guys that are smart guys. We went through some real adversity. I don't know, we may have to go through more adversity. That's also a time where you get to study each other, they get to study us, we get to study them. And rarely in life do you get to have great things where you don't have to go through some adversity. That's just the way life works. That's generally the way I feel it works. I'm just saying that's what I try to tell them. It's more about character. If you pick the right guys, you'll be okay."

I'll be the first to admit after each loss, I am angry and I want a quick fix, but by the next day I have had time to let it go and put my trust back into our coach. He brought us to the promise land three times, he certainly can do it again. Great post Winskins.

Great Post. It helps to remember this when things are tough, and after this weekend, they are tough.

But we'll come through stronger and better for it. There's no shortcut to the top of the hill. Just a long, hard climb.

Great Post winskins. You know, after the game, well on Monday after I had cooled off. I was thinking to myself what the worst problem in my life was. In all honesty, its the Redskins. I'm doing well in school, my family is healthy, I have good friends, I dont have to worry about anyone. That also made me think of how lucky I was too. Sports and those things you listed are on two totaly different sides of the spectrum, but it made me feel lucky that I'm not having to worry about any of my family or friends or myself in war right now (although I still pray for our troops.). I mean sure, the Redskins mean alot to me, and really dictate alot in my life, as sad as it is, I dont care. This is the one thing in my life (outside of people), that gives me that high and energy and at good times makes me feel alive, I freaking love it. However, even though the Skins do all those things, its great that its the biggest worry I have. Anyone on the board or in the US who have to worry about the real problems going on, god bless you. And of course.... God Bless The Redskins!!

I feel the same way. I am always looking for a quick fix...just like Synder and just like all of us skins fans. If the past few seasons taught us anything, it should be that there is no such thing as a quick fix. Just like danny boy needs to learn patience, so do we. I have accepted the fact that this season is lost. my focus is on building team chemistry, finishing strong and getting LA back healthy. If it takes a month, let him rest. I dont want something lingering all season then find out he needs surgery again in the off season....

Great post! Each week, especially after the losses, I am amazed by seeing post-game interviews with players, where they are talking about sticking together, and ACTUALLY MEANING IT! The past few years, it just seemed like they were saying what they were supposed to say, but didn't really feel it (with only a couple exceptions). Now they all do....this team is really taking on their coach's personality, and that is probably the one of the best things that needed to happen this year, win or lose. Everyone is enjoying each win and suffering after each loss as a team, not as individuals just trying to make a buck.
This kind of atmosphere leads to winning.....and it will, sooner or later....hopefully sooner! :thumb:

I get angry when the skins lose too, and it is one of my biggest problems, so i am lucky in that respect ... Having players like Fred Smoot, who lays his body on the line for the team every week and Antonio Pierce, a walk on who is becoming a great linebacker, are very encouraging to the franchise. Especially the way they handle themselves in post-game interviews, which i attribute to Joe Gibbs's teaching.
