Touchdowns > Field goals

I'm very proud of this team's performance yesterday against the Saints. They played well on both offense and defense, but we still have a problem. Why can't we get the ball in the endzone more often. This is a trend that has followed this team for a few years now. For some reason we just can't find away to cap off a drive.
Yesterday the game wouldn't have been near as close if we had used that short field the defense gave us to our advantage. Instead I watched us kick 3 straight field goals. Statistically we kicked the crap out of the Saints, but the score will never reflect that until we score some touchdowns.

Considering the early stalls on offense we still put up 29 points. Hopefully those early redzone struggles will iron themselves out.

When I think of how easily we could have hung 40 on them... Oh well. Baby steps.

Yep, no doubt. That game had blowout written all over it.

Forget what has happened in the past. We took a step yesterday. Our first step, not our last. We'll get there.

I think this is a good learning moment for the team. Against well balanced (offense/defense) teams we won't be able to get away with just field goals and hoping to pull a come back at the end of the game. I really hope they are able to work this out for the game against the Cards.

We could have dropped 35 just by kicking the freaking ball straight.

Re: Touchdowns > Field goals

This is certainly a concern . . .

Right now our targets in the redzone are most likely Cooley, Portis, Sellers, and sometimes Moss. This just simply isn't enough. Cooley should ALWAYS be covered like a blanket near the goal line. Portis has the speed to get around the edge, but that can only work so many times. Sellers had a couple seasons in which he caught several redzone TD's, but I guess teams are looking for it now. And Moss can get open with his speed on occasion, but his height makes him an easy match up in a close field.

Luckily we have some rookies that were brought in for this problem specifically. They just aren't there yet, and I wouldn't expect them to be until halfway through the season. Zorn is still a bit down on them, but he says Davis is the farthest along, which could really help (who's gonna be able to match up against Cooley AND Davis?). BUt Kelly is hurt again, and Thomas has had only one catch. So, I think this problem will work itself out, but I wouldn't expect it to change any time soon.

Touchdowns > Field goals > Missed Field goals > Punting on the opponents side of the field

Re: Touchdowns > Field goals

I'm actually not worried about the field goals. Campbell was moving them up and down the field pretty easily -- to me, that's the most significant sign of progress with this offense.

After being sacked at the 6 yard line, then to direct them for a score and going 5 for 5 in the process, Jason Campbell matured and showed he has what it takes.

What I'm sick of hearing though is that these are "flashes" of what he can do. Enough with the "flashes" -- let's do this every week.

Yes, JC needs to bring it every week if the Skins are going to win and if he is to be considered a top-shelf QB.

Re: Touchdowns > Field goals

It's kind of funny how things come around in a year. Last year we could start a game strong, and we just couldn't figure out a way to score and hold off the comebacks in the second quater. Maybe, we should have a Gibbs/Zorn offense. That way we could score points for the entire game......
