Re: Our WRs in 2009... My Thoughts
Again I will admit some were not drafted for a reason but some were from other teams and brought in Patton, Lloyd, I think Dameane Douglas, Dyson. I'll even agree the player has to match the type of scheme your running. Short passes vs deep passes. Gibbs style vs WCO. but I'm still amazed that he could not develope someone. None. He's developed none. Our only keepers have been developed elsewhere. except Thomas and Kelly and as I said we have heard bloggers to news media calling them busts. Whether due to injury or bad knees or simply calling them ignorant cause they can't pick up Zorns plays.
So if we pass on Thomas and Kelly cause the jury is still out....he's developed no one. Toler, Gant, Mann, Mix, Hoag, and Espy. I kinda liked what each brought to the table and felt they could be developed. Maybe some would need more time then others learning the NFL ropes but none. I guess if it's not broken you don't fix it but what if it won't work? To be honest I'm betting I'm missing someone or two. People I may have forgotten about or couldn't find on a list somewhere. I know when you are on a course of action and you keep getting the same results you check all outside influences to see what may be causing it, but at some point when the results keep coming up the same I believe you have to look at yourself and what your doing and could it possibly be causing the same results. Is there something you can do to change the outcome of your results. If whatever he's teaching is not working then I would hope he is mature enough to look at himself and figure out another way to coach/develope WR's but after 5 years of not accomplishing much I think the team has to do the same and think about changing him. |

Re: Our WRs in 2009... My Thoughts
If they get rid of Hixon, who would be a good candidate? I really hope they do, it killed me all season when (the few times) JC had time to throw, the wideouts could not get separation and get open beyond 5-10 yds from the LOS.

Re: Our WRs in 2009... My Thoughts
I don't know much about Stan Hixon, but this situation reminds me of the Simpsons sequence where Lenny is in charge of the powerplant.
"Um, work harder people," he says. I think there's an assumption here that if we could get a real Lenny in here, instead of that bum Hixon, our WR production would improve. But it probably won't do anything. I don't even think it's worth the buyout cost to fire Hixon. If his contract expires, we can go in a different direction for his sake. But until then, seems like sort of a witch hunt to blame a guy for not rescuing the careers of crappy WRs.

I guess your right, We can blame the line for not giving JC enough time to throw the ball. I'll agree with that. We can say the WR's brought in were second rate WR's and as you put it crappy, but I will not excuse the fact that he has no culpability in helping to evaluate the WR talent and add suggestions as to who the team should possibly go after. So if the WR's sucked then his evaluating talent sucks also Which means more of the same unless something changes. What a track record 0-25 in the development department. All but 3 sucked (who he did not develope;Moss, ARE, Thrash), and two who were not ready to play NFL football. Either physically nor mentally. Which again I hold him responsible for not giving them a work out routine prior to the season and helping them learn the play book during the season. Witch hunt. maybe. tired of mediocracy...yes. Where would Gibbs have been had he gone 0-25 in his second 2 seasons? |

Agree that Hixon isn't helping us discover talent at WR. But he also probably isn't hurting us there. Saunders' background was with receivers, and he was okay with Hixon, but we brought in Lloyd anyway. The guys we've drafted at the position have been total garbage thus far, but at least I hope Malcolm Kelly can break that trend.

Re: Our WRs in 2009... My Thoughts
Your probably correct but I always figured that at each level ie; little league, high school, college, and the pro's there was always something new to learn. Little league and high school you are only learning the basics so the college talent scouts can see you. You might have been a TE in high school but a LB in college. It all depends on how your body fill out. Yes college gives you some mechanics but a lot of colleges do not run a pro style offense which means you would have to come to the pros and learn the speed of the offense, fine tune your technique or learn a new technique, and learn how the NFL coach's want you to run your routes. I'm sure Hixon had some sort of input as to which WR's to pick up. I can't imagine the evaluaters picking guys and Cerrato going after them and telling Hixon "here we brought a few more in for you...good luck." with out any input.
I'll agree the ones we brought in were not 1st round draft choices but out of 20 WR's that came in and were let go he could not find a one? I would think his track record would get better each time he had to pick due to lessons learned. |

1. Clyde Christensen(Colts): Probably one of the best. not sure how we could bring him in though. Give him some Asst. title? who knows. The Official Website of the Indianapolis Colts 2. Mike Sheppard(Bengals): His WR's have led the league in receptions and yardage for the past several years. Again not sure how to bring him in. Coach - Cincinnati Bengals 3. Fred Graves(Titans): Another one of the best and again not sure how to bring him in. Tennessee Titans Coaches After those I started thinking about older coach's that may be sitting on the sidelines so I looked at some of the teams that ran the WCO and had high scoring years and came up with 1989-1990 49ers(SB year), 1994-1995 49ers(SB year), and 1996-1997 GB Packers(SB year). 1989-1990 49ers had Sherman Lewis: I could not locate where he is or if he is even coaching anymore. Detroit Lions Site: Sherman Lewis 1994-1995 49ers had Larry Kirksey: He is currently with the Texans. Again not sure how to bring in but he had an awsome resume. Coach - Houston Texans 1996-1997 Packers had Ray Sherman: He is currently with Dallas. Maybe we don't want a rival but he also had an awsome resume. Not sure how to steal him from them. DallasCowboys.com | Bios | Coaches and Executives Those were my ideas. I leave it up to you guys to look at and agree or disagree but it would be nice if Snyder/Cerratto/Zorn would be reading this thread and say hey lets get one of them. lol. Re: Our WRs in 2009... My Thoughts
Wikki has Sherman Lewis as out of football since 2004. Plus he's like 66 years old. Not sure if it's a healthy 66 but if he's available he's an upgrade.

... seriously, if Kelly or Thomas or both aren't significantly improved Danny Boy ought to sue Hixon for back wages (after firing him of course). This guy has yet to improve/develop a WR in the NFL (at least i haven't heard anyone dispute that point so far) and who's job is it anyway to 1) make sure his group knows the playbook inside and out and 2) make sure the WR corp can run precise routes and create separation?

Re: Our WRs in 2009... My Thoughts
Well, I think I threw out some honest viable options for Syder and Cerratto. I actually did the leg work for them. I think the least they could do is explore those possibilities to see if there is any way they could get them in.
At this point I'm really liking Larry Kirksey and Sherman Lewis and their resumes. Plus Sherman Lewis is free right now, helped coach in a WCO, and every team he was on went to the play offs. ....Vinny! |

Re: Our WRs in 2009... My Thoughts
^I like ARE and would like to keep him. Perhaps if they used him in the role he was used in Pitt then we would be better off. Put Kelly or Thomas in either #1 spot and Moss #2 or put Moss #1 and Kelly/Thomas #2. Make ARE the #3 WR.
