OM FIELD: Redskins 2009 Schedule - It's not that bad.

Redskins 2009 Schedule: "It's not that bad."
April 15, 2009

*

Buttercup and Westley have just entered the Fire Swamp, and look around.

Westly: “It's not that bad.”

Buttercup stares at him in disbelief.

Westley: “Well, I’m not saying I’d like to build a summer home here, but the trees are actually quite lovely.”

*

Every year I say I am not going to do it, and every year I do.

When the Redskins schedule comes out, I shut down my higher brain functions and play out the upcoming season in about a minute's time.

The first thing I always do is focus on the opener, because despite what the punditry will remind us over and over between now and then, it is not “just another game.” It is the game we will be focusing on, anticipating and building up for the next five months. It's also the game I will spend that time thinking about when envisioning the 2009 Redskins.

So yes, while technically it is “just one game,” in heart and mind it means a lot more from where we sit today than, say, a week thirteen game against the Raiders.

So despite my better judgment (because as I said, I wasn’t going to do it this year) I lasered right in on the season opener with great expectation—gimme a 1 o’clock Sunday home against that Lions, baby—and ... erk.

The Giants. There. Again.

Loss.

Then I proceeded to do what I always do (and I wager most every true fan does, even if he/she doesn’t admit it aloud)—I scanned down the list and tallied up projected wins and losses ...

The schedule is a pretty good one outside of the NFC East. On paper you would think we can win 10 games. We'll most likely be 9-7 or 8-8, just mediocre enough for DS to think we're almost there.

I refuse to think that we will be 8-8 this year. We have too much talent, and another year under Zorn. 10 wins is realistic with the schedule.

I know this is gut Om, but seriously we are gonna lose all our road divisional games and win our home ones lol? We will probably split or lose to one team twice and beat another team at home and away.

I realized home field is an advantage but going 8-0 at home is a bit ridiculous.

will be interested to see what Vegas has us at in terms of wins. last year that had our over / under at 7.5 which was damn close. im guessing it will be around 8 or 8.5 this year.

I say 10 minimum.

You say you know it was gut, but go on to call it ridiculous. Which is it?

When I did the exercise I did not give myself the luxury of going back afterwards and saying, "oh wait, I have them 8-0 at home; better go back and fix that." If I had, it wouldn't have been gut, it would have been gut-aided-by-intellectual-revision, a with dose of fear-of-public-ridicule thrown in as an antacid.

As noted in the piece, the results are almost sure to be different when I do this again later this summer. A prime candidate for change is likely to be that unintentional perfect defense of FedEx Field.

There you go! I know we can do this. Too much talent not to. I say we need to get our young wr's in the mix, and let Randel El sit the pine or use him in special situations. Yes, we over paid, but let's not let it ruin each season out of stubborness! We have a lot of young talent that is waiting to be exploded!
