Define 'mortgaging the future' for Sanchez

It seems from the past few days that many of us are resigned to us trying to make a move into the top 10 for Sanchez.. Snyder came out yesterday and said that we're not trading our '10 1st round pick and didn't leave any wiggle room in his assertion so let's assume for the sake of this argument that we stay true to that.

What would be an acceptable trade and what would be giving up too much?

For me, our 1st, 3rd and a 2nd or 3rd next year would be a lot but not too much IF we can get at least a 3rd for Campbell. That would mean just a net loss of one pick.

I like that he said he won't trade next year's #1, but what's that mean for this year? Giving up nearly the entire draft?

I don't believe that for a second. It's clearly a smokescreen, as is Seattle.

Good thread Pain, and I agree with what you say about the trade with the Jaguars. I think if the Rams don't take Sanchez (which my gut still says they will), and Sanchez falls to 8th then we will trade our 1st, 3rd, and 3rd next year for him. And we'll get a low 2nd/high 3rd for Campbell and we'll trade another 2010 pick for another 4th. Giving us Sanchez and 2nd/3rd, 4th, and 5th.

I disagree with the premise. I think the trade-up talk has all been smoke from the beginning. Mark my words: we will try to trade down. Failing that, we will stay put at 13. A trade up is not in the plan.

Mortgaging the future would be trading any picks next season. Hey, if you can get up to 7 or 8 with your third round pick, and you really, really like this guy and you get a little bit lucky and falls, well then, be my guest. Just live in the bed when you make it.

No one has traded up into the top five since, gosh, I can't even remember. You don't want to be the team that breaks that streak.

The Jets probably have this intel. Do you think they'll make a play for the 7th overall pick if Sanchez is there?

I'm all for getting Sanchez if needed and it appears the Skins leaked it close enough yet far enough from the draft to allow us fans to warm to the idea. I have no problem trading our 1st to move up, but we have to give trade value. Could it be next yrs 2nd and be done? It just seems an awfull lot.

I guess that accomodates the trade value a long with candy to make a team commit to the trade. I guess it is ok for a Franchise QB which pundits are touting him to be maybe not now but in the near future. I was hoping we could keep from our 3rd on.

I always wondered how the position coach's feel when they learn the team is interested in a certain person and it's not their position. Then find out the team is throwing away later picks that could help their spot. lol. Do they get pissed and walk out of the room?

Any trade for Sanchez is mortgaging the future cuz it means we're stuck w/ him...giving up picks to do so is just adding insult to injury.

Re: Define 'mortgaging the future' for Sanchez

Do the Rams still have Saunders? Sanchez will not work well in his system. but they may be thinking about trading with us if we are going to give up half our draft picks and possibly trade JC to them considering AS worked with him before and probubly likes him better then Bulger.

Funny, only like 3 or 4 teams were interested in him from the start. Now everyone wants him. I think half are looking at how they could take him then trade him to a team that wants him for players and picks.

I guess they could, but I have a feeling they won't

I believe that if the Rams don't take Sanchez at #2, he will be a Redskin.

Sorta like what we did to select Jason Campbell.
