Re: Levi Jones released by the Bengals

I hate the fact we're even talking about Jansen as the starter. Seriously, our long-suffering, overly loyal coaching staff has said the guy isn't starting material anymore (right after the season ended if I remember correctly).

The lineup should be Samuels, Dock, Rabach, Thomas, Jones
w/ backups Heyer, Bridges, Jansen, Rinehart, Williams.

If the coaches considered Jansen the starter they wouldn't be have Williams in camp and Jansen wouldn't be taking snaps at guard and center

I hear you man, what I meant is folks around here talking about a Jansen comeback as starter...i guess it's cool to hope for the best but IMO there's a bigger picture.

I gotcha. If he wins that job outright it would be a miracle.

You know, center's a very communicative position, and he's doing a great job with that. The quarterbacks like him because his butt's so tall, they can just stand up and look at things. They don't have to squat down."
I think Zorn saying this more likely solidifies Jansen NOT being our starting RT this year. Obviously they cant cut him for cap reasons so they are trying to find out if he can be useful in other positions. You don't see them trying Samuels or Dock or even Rabach at other positions. At best I think Jansen could end up being sixth man of the year (sorry, its NBA playoff time)

I agree. I think Jansen is a backup this year but could possibly push Rabach. At least that's the way I read it.

There is something strange going on here. Levi Jones can still play; he is not old and he's not wracked with injuries. He does not have the reputation for being "felonious". So, why are the Bengals - - not a team with a real deep roster - - so anxious to draft his replacement and move him out?

Is there something dark here? Or is this just an example of why the Bengals are the Bengals?
Money. In the NFL, the fact that contracts are not guaranteed is secondary to the fact that if you have talent you keep it, usually. The Bengals however, feel that their 3 million could be better spent elsewhere or pocketed. So though Levi Jones has value to his team, the team feels like they can spend .8 million and get the same effect. So he's out.

I think of Levi Jones as the perfect backup LT. Injury prone, but he can come off the bench if Samuels gets hurt, so the fact that he's injury prone doesn't matter. Then, we can go with anyone at RT.

What? The Bengals being cheap? Again?

Me too...but would you play him at RT while Samuels was healthy or just let him ride the bench?

...btw what is the extent of Jones' injury history? Is he on the downward slide or did he just hit a rough patch.

As I said, I don't think there's much interest from him as well. He will end up some team where he can start right away (i.e. Buffalo).

And it seems that he's not interested in Seattle.

There's not enough information really to say whether he's going to be injury prone until he retires or if he's just been down for the last three seasons, but that's a rough trend.

Thusly, I wouldn't even play him at RT if we got him. I would put him right behind Samuels on the depth chart, and hope he never, ever has to see the field. If he does, then you have a guy in there who doesn't at all need a reduced playbook. Unlike someone else I can think of.

I think we're better off at RT now than we were last year easily, but OT remains a need if only because you can't assume any player is injury proof...especially a guy coming off of injury.

That's because he wants to come to DC...he told me he can help this offense be great and he really, really hates seeing Jason on the turf half the season.
