this year foreshadowing next year's defense?
Just something that i thought of, but I think there are strong clues signaling that we will switch to a 3-4 next year. Greg Blache is probably not coming back next year due to his age/commitment issues he mentioned in the offseason/health. So we will have a new coordinator. We had a top 5 ranked defense last year with a bad offense, but we insisted on getting defensive players with all our big moves (haynesworth-nosetackle, orakpo-olb, jarmon-DE/OLB). We seemed to have some holes in our defense if we wanted to switch to the 3-4, and I believe that these 3 players perfectly fill those holes (Olb and NT...and DE for when Daniels gets too old)
Also, the fact that we have moved orakpo and wilson to olb was a head scratcher to just about everyone, but I believe that that we are trying to teach them how to stand up for the switch to the 3-4. The 3-4 has been significantly more successful than the 4-3 in recent years, I think that Danny and Vinny are big stat guys and are trying to switch to what works the best. Denver and Green Bay's wildly successful transitions this year i believe will convince us that it is the move to make. |

Re: this year foreshadowing next year's defense?
We put Orakpo in at OLB because he is undersized for an end. He needs more body to stand up against the run, but from the OLB spot he keeps the first level guys off of him more often and can use his speed. While I agree that Orakpo would make a good LB in a 2-4, Haynesworth does not. He is a 4-3 guy and would be a waste of the overpayment we gave him to ask him to simply be the plug in a 3-4.

Re: this year foreshadowing next year's defense?
I know that there have been many 3-4 defense threads in the past. All I'm trying to say is that I believe that the FO has already made their decision on what to do. In my mind the evidence of all their recent moves line up for a change.

For the first time in a long time, we have the personnel to run a 3-4 in the future if we so choose. It would, however, require us to replace one of most productive players in Carter next year with another OLB. But we might just end up hiring a coordinator who is well versed in the 3-4. It could go either way right now.

Re: this year foreshadowing next year's defense?
It's worth pointing out that our LBs, with the exception of Fletcher in our base defense (which we run only 5-7 plays per game), already play like a group of 3-4 LBs. Problem being, I'm not sure they are good enough to do it full time.
Our DL can certainly handle it though.

Further I'm not convinced we have the LB's currently in place for a 3-4 defense. We have converted backers with limited ability to play in space. I would say there are areas needed to be addressed before our defense would be considered 3-4 formidable. Last edited by SmootSmack; 10-23-2009 at 06:41 PM. Reason: edited per longtimefan's request |

Re: this year foreshadowing next year's defense?
Call me traditional, but I've always been a fan of the 4-3. It has worked well for us, not to mention the Giants and Eagles, who also play a 4-3. NFC East football is about running the football on offense, and stopping the run on D. We need to get back to winning games in the trenches, the way Gibbs 1.0 won Super Bowls.

On a side note, I highly doubt that many 350 lb NT's play more than 60% of the snaps. |

How does switching D's effect Big Al's play? What did they play in Tenn?

Re: this year foreshadowing next year's defense?
This thread essentially gives too much credit to Vinny and Snyder for being smart enough to plan the switch. If anything turns out good for the Redskins, it's because of sheer luck, not by any planning on the part of Cerrato and Snyder.
