Edit: DirtBag pretty much got it, I was SS in HS and college (nothing big) but some plays I played FS.. It all depends on players' skills and how coaches utilize them..
That's pretty much the way Hasslett described his use of the safety positions.

The game has changed so much from it's early concepts regarding strong & free safety, a time before the two positions had a class distinction. DC's now deploy the psitions in a variety of ways. Strong origionally got it's name by a safety almost always lining up on the strong side of the formation covering the T/E exclusively....where the FS was freed-up to help double with the corner when necessary. Now, with so much pre-snap motion, audibles and three/four W/R sets, DC's are finding more creative ways to utilize the two positions.
