Nats sign Jayson Werth- 7 yrs, $126M
Interesting move. Already 31. Is he really worth $70M more than Adam Dunn, who's the same age? Not so sure.
Jayson Werth agrees to $126 million, 7-year deal with Nationals - ESPN

I'd like to have Dunn for 4-years and $56 Mil. That seems like a better deal.

I wish they had re-signed Dunn, even for 4 years, but I like this move in that it says to other big name free agents that the team is willing to pay. Hopefully they can get some more FA's to team up with some of the promising younger players and field a competitive team in 2011.

Re: Nats sign Jayson Werth- 7 yrs, $126M
Problem is they'll be paying $18 million a year in 2017 for a 38 year old outfielder.
If they don't get to the playoffs in the next few years before Werth falls off, there won't be enough revenue growth to put any pieces around him. Better hope Stasburg's OK and that Harper develops quick. This is a NY Mets move.

well, with the nats overpaying for a marginally effective player, that should inflate any future FA negotiations this winter. all they have to do is point to werths career production vs nats contract.
good for the nats thoo, atleast werth seems to be professional, he is someone to plug in and protect zimmerman which your lineup really needs. markakis with no one to bat behind him just got pitched around all year.

The Nats have signed Matt Stairs. Washington Nationals give veteran Matt Stairs chance to make team - ESPN.
For some reason, I really like the fact that this guy keeps getting a job in MLB. Comparatively speaking, he has never been a highly paid player, and there is nothing fancy about his game. He's just a solid veteran who brings to the plate with every at-bat the potential to stroke one over a wall. I'm not a Nats fan, so maybe those who are don't share my enthusiasm. |

Getting Rick Ankiel too. Too bad Greinke rejected a trade to DC, makes sense that he'd prefer Milwaukee though

I didn't want Greinke for the price the Royals were asking. I like Jordan Zimmermann and Drew Storen too much, and i feel Greinke is more of a win now move, than a build the team for the future move. Let's keep building the roster for future success and let Greinke go to Milwaukee to see if they can keep pace in the NL.

Gratuitous shot at the Skins that I don't like. But otherwise amusing!
