He could, but Orakpo fell even further to #13 so who knows.

Re: Skins cut Andre Carter

I'd pick Lindsey Vonn over Vonn Miller, thats why it wouldnt be good for me to be a GM.

That was incredibly good fortune, especially Buffalo taking Maybin with Orakpo still on the board. If a no brainer like Miller isn't available when we pick, I would be just as happy if we traded down to later in the 1st round and added another 2nd round pick. There are A LOT of holes to fill, especially with a defense running the 3-4 that was built around 4-3 personnel. Offensive line must be a priority also. It will take 2-3 more drafts to undo years of neglecting line depth on both sides of the ball.

Re: Skins cut Andre Carter

But, with no draft trades and no FA before the draft, a lot of teams ahead of us could take QBs earlier than usual if they need one...and a lot of teams do. Because of the uncertainty on how and when they can address their needs outside of the draft, teams will be drafting on NEED instead of best player available...the opposite of the norm.

If this is true, we should be hitting both lines hard in this draft...maybe a 3-4 LB, WR and FS too. The players we release between now and the draft could be indications of the holes we're going to fill in the draft (except for Portis, he was a money decision and we have Torain/Williams).

I think this draft will be the most unpredictable ever.

I disagree. Ac is a great guy and a great role model for the younger players as everyone agrees.
But as a player, he is a bit of a one trick pony. He was a great pass rusher in the 4-3, but he got used in the run game. I used to get frustrated as hell with him even in the 4-3. He is not a great instinctive player, which is why he failed as a 3-4 LB, because 3-4 Lb's have to be good at both run and pass.
Just put him on the edge on passing downs. The high sack numbers got him noticed but that is a bit misleading, because the rest of his game was substandard.

I think his size won't be too bad due to his instincts and ability

I totally agree.
Not only that...but they could have traded Haynesworth, Portis, Rogers too.
All had decent value....and we may end up with none of them on the team with zero in return.

I would argue we could have gotten at the time
Haynesworth - 2nd
Carter - 3rd
Portis - 3rd
Rogers-3rd

Imagine if we had those pick this year! or even half of them

Yes. That about says it. This would also apply to the rest of the team over the last 5-6 years or so.

I agree completely with SouperMeister. Carter was a good 4-3 DE, and he should have been traded at peak value last year, instead of being released. Poor judgement by Shanny to switch too early to a 3-4.

We've also undermined the trade value of McNabb and Haynesworth. Everyone knows we're trying to get rid of both.
Better to make the switch too early than too late.

For that matter, the FO screwed up not trading him last year coming off a 10 sack season when Shanny first announced the switch to a 3-4. Carter's last season in SF was evidence enough that he was a poor fit, but he certainly should have gotten us a draft pick in return last year. FO Fail.
Not easy to trade someone with a no trade clause and a roster bonus due these days. It's not like they didn't try

With the exception of Haynesworth, I have no idea how you believe those players have that much value, particularly portis.
