Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Panthers)

People always overreact. Sure, you feel bad about losing, but as always the sky isn't falling.

1) Beck looked good. One reason he didn't look as good in the first half was they were running 90% of the time. He didn't get a rhythm until the 2nd half. There were 3-5 dropped passes that didn't help, and our defense sucked big time to destroy his chances. We can win with him if our D gets back.

2) Defense What happened? What's up with that talk about a top 5 to top 10 defense?? Was not having Atogwe to back up Hall/Wilson the reason? The D was the reason we were 3-1, and it is one of the reasons we lost the last two games. The first half against Eagles and the 2nd half of this game the defense gave up scoring drives 7 of 9 drives. Like they weren't even playing the game. Given the Bills offense, we're going to have a tough time next week as well.

3) Shanahan will not be fired. That just stupid.
4) Injuries - Every team goes through them, but seems like our best / key players are always fragile. Moss, Cooley, TW, Hightower, Atogwe, Licht.
5) Remember, each loss hurts, but perhaps the silver lining on these is that it was supposed to be a rebuilding year and the losses give us a better shot at a better draft pick /QB.

On the whole, I'm starting to think secondary/CB is a bigger priority than I thought for next year.

Actually, the idea of a head coach getting fed up with his personnel guy and firing him is pretty funny. The only thing more screwed up than a power structure like that is one where the coach actively prevents himself from building a talented roster.

I appreciate that (even if that "stupid" remark is directed my way); I just want reassurance he won't be fired. I think he is a solid coach and I want consistency.

Snyder has had a quick hook in the past but he is in awe of Shanny. Unless we completely tank, Shanny isn't going anywhere.

Here are my locks for the 2012 starting lineup if I was coach/gm. All the spots that are left blank I feel like are open to having new starters. Plus we still need depth across the board. I like our LG too, but the injury he had was pretty serious.
It is real early, but looking forward to 2012.

DE - Cofield / Golston
NT - Jenkins / Neild
DE - Carriker / Bowen
OLB - ORAKPO
MLB - FLETCHER - maybe 1 more year left.
MLB -
OLB - KERRIGAN
CB -
SS - LANDRY
FS - OTOGWE
CB -

WR -
WR -
LT - WILLIAMS
LG - Don't know if KL makes it back from a very serious knee injury
C - MONTGOMERY / Cook
RG - CHRIS CHESTER
RT - Brown
TE - Davis
RB - Torain / Helu / Hightower
FB - YOUNG
QB -

We've got to shore up the run D. I think a healthy Jenkins will bolster the front 3. We've got problems at MLB, Fletch won't last forever and Rocky's up & down. Our CBs are sub-par at best.

I like what we have at TE, our OL has played above expectations, although the KL injury couldn't have come at a worse time. Our RBs are solid and MS has a knack for finding players there. Young has been playing well. We need a QB.

I think we've improved our overall talent at OL/DL/RB/FS this off-season. Got to build from the lines and middle of the field first. WRs can be found, it's funny how a top flight QB makes a good WR corps. We've got needs at QB, CB, ILB & WR next off-season.

We're struggling with the run right now and from what I see it's not a physical issue, its a gap discipline/angle/responsibility issue. Rak, LL stood out (in a bad way) Bowen still flowing too hard with stretch action away also. Our secondary is bad without OJA. Hall & Wilson aren't good cover corners. Smith made them both look real bad. One of the big pass plays was getting Rak in coverage on LaFell (good design by CAR) and Barnes not getting over to help. The nice throw/catch to Smith was on Wilson with 37 getting there late (that hasn't happened before). Smith just abused Hall / Wilson on a couple others.

Edit: not directed at you, but just to add, no way I see MS getting fired even if we lose out.

Haha.. Sorry, the comment wasn't directed directly at you. Just that to fire Shanahan would be ludicrous. The reason we've sucked for so long is that we install a new coach every 1-2 years. Each coach installs a new system, each coach selects/drafts players that fit the system, and then we fire the coach. That leaves a roster of wasted players who each new coach gets rid of. Wastes a lot of draft/FA and puts the organization back years.

Look at Pittsburgh - they've had 16 coaches in their team history. We've had 7 in the last 10-11 years. Stability is good for the team, and I think Shanny is worth keeping at least 4-5 years, probably more. I like the direction he has us headed in.

We lost today, but that's just one game. Shanny's draft and free agency (minus McNabb), have been excellent. I believe he's revamped our core which should benefit us for years to come. Can't change everything in 1.5 years.

An old, crappy roster bereft of speed and talent. You can't turn that around in 22 regular season games. We're getting younger and faster, but this team was so badly in the toilet when the current coaching staff took over. You don't hire a 2x Super Bowl champ only to fire him so quickly.

Things take time. And for god's sake, he's 3-3 not 0-6.

Also, who in the media is calling for Shanny's head?

Pretty much my gut* told me that Beck would spark the offense. He delivered...a little late, but he still delivered.

*Same gut told me that Rex Grossman would give life to an offense Donovan McNabb was unable to. I'm 2-for-2!!!!!

I propose we put a moratorium on using the term "high/low football iq." It's being overused way too much today.

4) Injuries -
5) Remember, each loss hurts, .
1) for a competent competing NFL team, beck DID NOT LOOK GOOD. he had flashes at the end but overall he showed that he limits an offense and is not an NFL qb. nor is rex or anyone weve had the last 10 years. makes mcnabb and his redskins passing yard setting season last year look pretty good huh?..before he was benched for not calling kyles plays as kyle wanted them called. ..but man we put up yards, points and big plays last year. i think.

2) defense is good. weve played some of the shitty most injured O lines ive ever seen but the D is good enough. not top 5 or 10 but 15ish.

3) shanny isnt going anywhere, unless he walks after next year

4) injuries - almost haf way thru the season we have them

5) losses hurt if you thought this team was 8-8 or better.

this team is improved but we arent going to stop being the skins (good D, pedestrian O) until we get a legit qb . . . year in year out, same crap different year.

lol mcnabb gave us about 10 games of the most exciting explosive offense we have seen from a qb in b&g in 15 plus years (minus todd collins 4 or so games). . . id bet money he had the most 20 yards plus plays per attempt of any qb the past 15 years.

pretty sure if he wasnt pulled he was on pace or near pace to set skins single season passing yards record. . .
