Redskins new statement on Taylor

More news at redskins.com, check out full statement there. The team have told Taylors agent he is excused from the remaining OTA's and minicamp scheduled for later this month. Some one please post this. I am dumb.

No word on training camp, I smell more trouble coming.

Not that this "excused absence" would have mattered anyways.

Wow, they excused him from the mandatory camp too? That's a little surprising to me. Beginning to sever the ties perhaps? I don't want to read too much into it, but they've just done a 180 from "we're really disappointed he's not here....we really want him here" to "Don't bother coming here". We can all hope for the good of the team that they just really want him to get this resolved without any additional pressures from the team, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a little more than that. The coming weeks are going to be interesting.

Re: Redskins new statement on Taylor

The mini camp is in less than 2 weeks time. No WAY they want to have him here with the legal sutff hanging over his head. Maybe by training camp in late July, they'll be a clearer picture of the legal situation, and Taylor can actually come to camp and begin rebuilding some bridges (if that's ever going to happen...). But it's not a surprise at all that he's been excused from minicamp.

Taylor has to get his life straightened out before he can get back to football, and the skins recognize that. Maybe Taylor will never come around, but pressuring him to come to minicamp now won't help anyone.

Re: Redskins new statement on Taylor

Some comments today from Taylor's teammates (from the Post). Wonder what Portis and the other U guys have to say now?

Veteran defensive lineman Phillip Daniels said that the conclusion among many of the defensive players he spoke to yesterday was that Taylor's actions -- including pulling a gun in a residential area, according to police reports -- were "crazy," they aim to counsel Taylor and help him make better life choices.

"After I got the results [on Taylor's arrest] and stuff, I felt bad in two ways," Daniels said. "I felt bad for us as Washington Redskins players, and for him as a person. I never thought he'd go to the extreme he went to. I don't know all the details yet but he's young, and these young mistakes are killing his career right now, and you've got to be smarter than that as a player. We've got a lot of guys working hard trying to win a Super Bowl, and for him not to be here and for this to come up, it's not good at all. Sean's got to be smarter, and you never know what's going to happen with this. The state of Florida is tough on guns, and who knows."

Offensive lineman Randy Thomas said: "He needs to get himself motivated [to play football]. With guns and all of that, I don't get into all of that; it's so childish. Personally, I just try to stay away from things like that. The guy is a great player, but as a man, he's got to take some steps decision-wise."

A swath of elder players spoke with Taylor following his drunk driving arrest, hoping to guide him through what was a turbulent rookie season, and they plan on doing so again when he returns.

"First of all, he's a great player," said receiver Taylor Jacobs, who shares an agent with Taylor, "and second of all, he's a great guy. I played against him in college, and in everything I've seen from him he's been a first-class guy since I've know him. . . . Sometimes when you go back home, it's totally different. But he's a great guy. I was very surprised to see this happening to him."

Re: Redskins new statement on Taylor

It looks like it will be the league that govern's Taylor's punishment.......that is if he escapes Florida's criminal charges...........I see some suspended games in Sean Taylor's future

"The League has a Personal Conduct Policy that governs this type of situation and we will be discussing the matter with League officials. All questions regarding the League's Personal Conduct Policy should be directed to the League Office.

I'm glad other players are speaking out against this incident. Randy Thomas hit the nail on the head calling it childish..............

Well I don't know how much they'd like him if this was say Rufus Brown...somewhat similar to letting Quincy Carter go but turning your back to Lawrence Taylor's coke habit

I agree. Nothing good can come from everyone attacking the kid. If he legally gets through this, he obviously needs some help. His teamates would be a good form of couseling for him, as Phillip Danliels said. It's nice to see the guys sticking together, even though I'm very critical of Sean right now.

I hope you're right, but doesn't Sean actually have to want to listen first? I mean, here's a guy that pretty much doesn't want anything to do with his teammates until he HAS TO show up at camp (now he doesn't even have to do that). In an ideal world, he wakes up and listens, but communication is a two-way street. His teammates can try to talk to him all they want, but ST doesn't strike me as a guy who has any interest in listening.

Re: Redskins new statement on Taylor

Also true. Hopefully he'll get better with age. It seems to me though that once you get in trouble with guns, its kind of a one-way street from there, unfortunately.

It takes a certain kind of person to actually pull a gun and threaten someone's life and I'm afraid Sean is that kind of person.
