Skinster, I think your original intuition about the need for a big-time QB was the correct one.

Certainly a defense which brings strong pressure from the front seven is important, too, as you indicate. And a running game is always helpful. But to me the 2011 Colts are a case in point that you have to have a big-time signal caller. Your examples of the 49ers and Texans are good. But don't forget that both of those teams had QB's who played like big-time QB's at least temporarily, whether those QB's are really big-time in the long run or not.
