Everything is bigger than DC. The real question is how do the surrounding areas stack up for the respective cities? When you throw in Montgomery County-Maryland, Prince George’s County-Maryland, Fairfax County-Virginia, Arlington County-Virginia, and Loudoun County-Virginia.

Montgomery and PG County combined have a greater population then Charlotte as does Fairfax County alone. It's not the city itself, it's the surrounding area.

Granted no one should have said Charlotte is small, but by the same token it's not bigger then DC as a whole.

The Charlotte MSA is the largest in the Carolinas and the sixth largest metropolitan area in the Southeastern region of the United States, behind Miami, Atlanta, Washington, DC, Tampa, and Orlando.
