It saves just over $2 million to cut him now. The real gain is in 2013, where he no longer counts any of the $5.8 million.

The other options are to keep him at his $6 mil figure this year and then only get a fraction of that cap back next year if he is released, or to release him post June 1 and save something close to $4 million this year. But then there is a small (between 1 and 2 million) cap charge next year.

Or keep him until his contract expires, obviously.
