The reason they don't show the games is because they can't possibly make any money on them. ESPN is not really about promoting sports but rather about making money. They CAN show fat asses throwing darts and old guys playing pool because the rights to those events are either A) super cheap or B) free. The soccer rights are much more expensive and are not exclusive as has been stated since the Spanish broadcasts are shown on several stations.

Your right ESPN is after all a business and the fact is that Americans as a whole just don't follow soccer. Espn would have the games on if they thought they could sell the advertising to make it profitable to show.
