This is no slap on the wrist. The program was killed without being officially declared dead

Personally, I'm surprised they did this much. I would have shut down their program this year, and then imposed these following sanctions following this year. Realistically you knew they weren't going to end the football program even though it should have ended it.

What recruit is going to go to Penn St. with no scholarship and no chance at the postseason? I believe this is more detrimental to the school than a 1 year ban. I would have liked to also see them open up free transfers for current players without the waiting period to let current players get out.

The PSU fans will stil be tailgating and the University will still fill the seats every Saturday home game. To many of these Paterno apologists, nothing will be different to them other than the scoreboard. They'll continue to do their annoying "WE ARE...PENN STATE" chant and who knows...they'll probably rally and up their contributions to try to make up for what they feel is an unfair punishment.

The Paterno shrines are STILL up where I work. It's disgusting. They're still denying Paterno or anyone other than Sandusky did anything wrong. They want the Governor investigated to distract from the real investigation on Paterno. They're crying about the statue. They learned NOTHING, nor will they as long as the team is suiting up...it will be business as usual.

Maybe those outside of PA don't understand how crazy and obsessed these PSU fans and alumni are. It's cult-like. It makes Red Sox nation look like a book club. They literally make it their religion and are blind to reality. You never could say anything negative about Penn State (which I always have because I see the University for what it is...a state-funded party school for people who can't get into PA's better colleges).

Trust me, these "punishments" won't teach anyone a lesson. Sure it will reduce their profits and hurt their team's record on the field. They'll still pretend Paterno is the all times win leader, they'll still cover their cars and yards with blue and white merchandise and they'll still come into the offices on Friday mornings doing their stupid chant. I know these people.

Like Matt Millen just said, what this really affects is recruiting. That's the PSU mentality...football trumps all, even the lives of children.

Somebody posted this on craigslist.

Slightly Used Joe Paterno Statue

Also, Big Ten is going to announce their sanctions at 11am EST.

I think the article said that they will have a right of transfer without penalty.

Re: Sex Abuse Scandal Rocks Penn State

So is this worst than a one-year "Death Penalty"? Several articles, online, seem to say that. They are basically playing meaningless football for 4 years, which would lead me to believe their program will suffer in the long run. Also, why aren't the players allowed to transfer out if they want to?

I mean the NCAA can't tell someone "stop rooting for Penn State, take down your Joe Paterno magazine cutouts, tear up your autographed DJ Dozier poster"

I recognize that this is significant and even devastating. Call me a literalist, however, they should be officially declared dead.

Football should not be played at PSU. Not next year. Not the year after that. Not until they have submitted proof that the culture evidenced bythe Freeh Report has been utterly destroyed root and branch.

No - But they can take the product they root for off of the field.

You're right. I didn't click read more. My apologies. The kids can transfer without penalty and keep their scholarships. I'm okay with that.

I also just heard they're paying the 60M over 5 years -- I don't like that....

Re: Sex Abuse Scandal Rocks Penn State

Additionally, How exactly is vacating wins in any way related to, or an appropriate punishment for OFF-FIELD issues?

The former players will still tell their grandkids about the games they won and the Bowl games they went to.

Suddenly, we just pretend those games and wins didn't happen?

This "punishment", specifically this part is a joke. It doesn't make any sense. The players earned those wins. They should be not punished. Rewriting history won't affect anyone or help the guilty realize what they've done wrong. You think the Board of Directors, the Athletic department Graham Spanier and Sandusky's wife care that when they search the team's W-L record online, it will look different? You think they care about no Bowls for 4 years? They may care if the program was shut down...along with their income.

I wanted the football program to be killed...at least for 14 years, how long they covered up the rapes. Then we get the cries "why punish the current players, they didn't do anything wrong!" True, but we're punishing the football PROGRAM. The AD, the board, the coaches...and everyone who put the public relations and income of the football program above these kids, including the fans who still won't admit anything happened. The players can transfer and play right away. If they still want a crappy PSU degree, they can stay there for the academics.

Other than lost money, the football program literally just got away with rape, at least from the NCAA.

Perhaps so that a pedophile protector doesn't hold one of the most coveted titles in college athletics?

Bobby Bowden was no saint either. Nothing THIS BAD but that's not what we should be focusing on. Record books are meaningless in the big picture.

Shutting them down would hopefully open up the eyes of everyone who helped hide this, including the fans. Around the campus, this was not only known to be going on, it was a joke. They even named an ice cream flavor after the monster.
