FINALLY. i always hated holding my breath extra long every time the ball was in the air going to ol' 'fiddyfiddy'. what's the purpose of size if you can't catch the clutch ones? better to replace him with speed to at least stretch the field out for Portis and Cooley.

still, he was as good as gone, why didn't the cats wait till we released him?

This way the are garanteed to get him, if the waited they would have to compete for all of the droping hotness

That 2 million of base salary, does that mean anything to us?

that means we get 2$mill in cap space back to pay for our rookie 1st rounders... and we're responsible for the 1.5$ thats left (so we bought a 6th round draft pick for 1.5$mill)...

its a good deal for them and we got more than a case of beer, BUT we could have gotten a 4th rounder for him before the draft and released barrow before the 2005 season too so its still a FO blunder, just with a partial recovery.

How could they have gotten a 4th before the draft?

Was an official offer on the table and the Skins turned it down?

It's just nice to see him packaged up and gone. And no, I don't think there was an offer on the table. Teams WERE offering a 4th rounder but he was wanting that contract extension.

I'm not so sure that's true. There was a lot of speculation that the Skins were holding out for a 3rd rounder, but I never heard that they had a solid offer from any team for a 4th. My understanding is that no team wanted to risk a high or mid round draft pick on a guy who didn't appear willing to sign a long-term deal. If the skins would have had a solid offer for a 4th rounder, I think they might have taken it.

The $2 million they are paying is his base salary. It sounds like we aren't paying out any money (or a negligible amount, if we are) other than the bonus monies he has already received.

I don't think anyone expected signing bonus to be refunded - and even if it was, I don't think it could be applied to the cap.

Yeah Matty, getting a 7th rounder for a former 1st round pick really changes my opinion of the front office. You are sooo right, I should shut my mouth, whatever was I thinking? This is nothing to high five each other about, its a sad day really as a first round pick hits the door for next to nothing. Gardner has real talent and he'll do well in Carolina. So, lets evaluate this front office on their moves since Gibbs got there:

1. Traded Bailey AND a 2nd rounder for Portis.
2. Traded for Mark Brunell, gave him a giant contract with a crippling signing bonus.
3. Traded disgruntled WR Coles to the Jets for Santana Moss. Moss held out.
4. Traded the 2005 third and a 2006 first and fourth round pick for Denver’s 25th overall.
5. Traded a 2001 first rounder to Carolina for a 6th or 7th round choice. In all fairness Gardner was going to be released for salary cap purposes.

1. Drafted Sean Taylor (I know, he's a meathead off the field) but he's a major talent
2. Drafted Chris Cooley
3. Signed Shawn Springs
4. Signed Cornelius Griffin
5. Signed Marcus Washington
6. Traded for Clinton Portis, one of the best running backs in the league who just turned only 23
7. Moss held out of what? voluntary OTAs? So what?
8. And so on...

Why are people whining about not getting what THEY think Gardner is/was worth when nobody offered it in the first place? If Gardner was worth a fourth rounder, heck if he was worth a 1st rounder, don't you think a team would have made the trade for him alot sooner?

paulskinsfan, what did you expect the Redskins to get for Gardner? Who cares if he's a former first round pick? He never lived up to it. Thats why when our great FO tried to get a 3rd round pick for him, no one thought he was worth it. What does that tell you? If all they can get is 6th round pick, then take it. It's better than getting nothing.
