Re: Around the NFL...Week 5 Style

The Kansas City Star is now doing anything its power to not print the word "Redskin" in it's articles due to its derogatory/racist meaning. Can't say I blame them... they aren't the first and won't be the last to oppose the name. I wonder how long the NFL can continue to ignore this situation.

What's everyones opinion on a possible future name change? Ideas for new names/logos? I think anything to go along with the Nationals & Capitals would be cool. I saw Federals brought up in a blog, maybe something along those lines. The Washington Hogs would be awesome too, keeping a traditional feeling.

Funny thing this whole conversation. Go to Indian reservations and a lot of them have Redskins/Indians/Braves as the high school mascot. So if its not considered racist by the Indians, then why are we having this conversation?

I think the people who want these names to disappear are more racist to the Indians than the people who support those names being used. What better way to eliminate any Indian Heritage from the USA then to make sure you hear as little about Indians as you can. So the Kansas City Star can maintain the support for genocide of Indians all they want, it doesnt make them right.

From a person with Cherokee blood running through my veins... and proud of it.

But I'm sure they print the word Chiefs............

Not saying the two are the same, but some native americans have some pretty thin red skin.......

And I'm shocked your from NYC.

Twas a joke, not meant to offend. Jokes about race, religion, sexual preference, disabilities are the funniest jokes in the world, and people that take em seriously are too..........um, serious? I can't grow any facial hair from the fact that somewhere up in the vast branches of my family tree, I have blackfoot indian lines. Kinda neat, but getting offended by the term "Red skins" is a little ridiculous and touchy, at least imo.

How about the Washington "flushed faces"? C'mon! I hate the age of political correctness. I hope they never change the name, might as well get a new franchise.

I'm a lifelong Redskins fan and can't even fathom a name change. But I have a hard time coming up with a credible argument for why the name isn't extremely offensive/racist (more so than other Native American-related names that do not focus on skin color). This is probably a topic to just leave alone.

Agreed. Washington Tecumseh's like the lawn mower motors Indian chief.

Im still trying to figure out who decided it was racist, since it wasnt the Indians. The real racist term at that time was "Injun".

200 years ago, people called you by what the color your skin looked with the word skin after it. As much as people joke about whiteskins, thats what whites were called back then. African American/Blacks were called blackskins. Indians (both native american and from India and that part of Asia) were called redskins, and hispanics as well as chinese/japanese/korean ect were called yellowskins.

One thing I have never understood. There were these people that killed Indians at will. A group of people that said beating a 5 year old Indian child to death with the stock of the shotgun was to fun to waste a bullet on them. Yet no one wants to outlaw the sports term... COWBOYS...

It isn't 200 years ago. I think there are many "real" racist terms out there for Native Americans. Also, are you seriously saying (or suggesting) that a team called the blackskins, with an African American person as a mascot, would not be considered racist? C'mon man!

N.B. This has got to be a flame.

Again, what's the purpose of a team name that's derogatory?

Giants, Eagles, Titans, Saints....Wankers.

Don't see the self-aggrandizement or clarion call in the last one. Good luck selling jerseys with the name on.

We have this topic every year. The name stays, but if you think it's racist you should withdraw your support.

If the Black Community call it racist, then so be it. But I do not have the right to decide what is racist for Black people, thats up to them what they deem derogatory to themselves. Just like you dont have the right to decide what is racist to Indians. The fact that your entire argument is based on "Indians are to stupid to think for themselves" means you are more racist to an Indian than someone saying redskin. What do you not understand about that? Just because you support the erasing of any and all Indian Heritage from the American record books says more about you than it does me.

Stop claiming your blatant hatred of Indians then claim that im the one who is flaming anyone. You are the one saying that Indians are so worthless that they are not allowed to think for themselves. That YOU are the one who decides what THEY are supposed to be offended by.
