Re: At least they threw downfield!
I noticed bits and pieces so we still have much to improve on. We have three more pre-season games to establish some form of consistency in combining all three aspects of the game, offence, defence, special teams. We really didn't show well in any particular area last night. Still a bit concerned about the downfield passing game but it's early yet and we still have time. We "must" establish consistency in drives that produce points as opposed to a few plays and punt.

Nice to hear about Dockery throwing Jenkins around a bit.
How often did they use the shotgun? |

Re: At least they threw downfield!
Holy cow! I didn't get a chance to see the game being in Connecticut, but Didn't we just put up 3 points in the first half off a blocked field goal? What are we talking about here??? It is great that the line played better but we need to score points! I mean normally I am very optomistic, but after the offseason we had and getting smaller and faster wideouts we were a little anemic in this game. We are going to have to make some HUGE strides to be good this year. I understand it is the first game, but we had our starters in all of the first half and we could not score on their second string? Did anyone watch the game I saw the highlights of???

Re: At least they threw downfield!
As bad as Ramsey looked, I was happy to see the 3 WR set and the screens were great. The O-line did do a great job of giving Ramsey time, but for some reason he still had "happy feet" in the pocket. He never planted his feet when he did throw, and before he even got pressured it seemed like he had a hard time making a decision on who to throw to. Maybe the Panthers were running a soft coverage, but still Ramsey looked like a rookie back there.
Speaking of rookies, Nemo Broughton was probably the biggest highlight of the game. The guy is straight up a downhill runner, and he has decent speed for a guy that weighs 250. He will help us out tremendously on short yardage and goaline situations. Another rookie that stood out was Campbell. He showed great poise in the pocket and did a great job of making quick decisions. I only wish that we could see him with the 2nd team receivers instead of the guys that won't be here come week 1. But so far Campbell has impressed me, and for now it seems like Gibbs has found his QB for the future. It looks like the time off last year recharged Brunells batteries (especially his arm). He did a great a job of scanning the field and reading the defense, and at one point I saw throw a rope to McCants (WOW!!). The defense was leaky, but then again we were missing 9 quality players. Delhomme and Weinke had all the time in the world to make plays which was dissapointing. But the run defense was decent. What stood out to me was the poor tackling and poor coverage downfield. I'm sorry to AJFC, but the ADE HAS TO GO. Seriously, he gets burned almost all the time and he's probably the worst tackler on the team. |

On a positive note Campbell looked very composed and comfortable.

Re: At least they threw downfield!
I agree that it's great news about the O-line, but let's not get carried away here--the vertical passing game, which is crucial to the success of the team, was not there. So we still don't know about that, and it's the biggest question mark we have.
I do think it all starts with the O-line, and that if they can give PR time to throw, he'll get the vertical game going, but until I see it (and until it puts points up on the board), I am going to withhold judgment. It's the first preseason game--we can't read too much negative in it, but by the same token, we can't read too much positive in either. Gotta be realistic here--keep an even keel and improve week-to-week. (PS Nice to hear about Dockery--but the knock on him is consistency. Can he keep it going for a full game, and a full season? If he does, we are going to have a serious O-line.)

He's to humble to admit it, but I'm going to give PSUSkinsfan11 some props. Even before the draft he said we should select Nemo Broughton. He was dead on about that. This guy looked really sharp out there (even against Panther scrubs). I couldn't tell though, can he block? When we traded for Brunell last offseason, I'll admit I didn't have the Nostradamus-like foresite of Offiss Beathard, I really thought that Brunell had two or three more good years to give us. I never even remotely imagined he would play as bad as he did-though Matty and I have said several times the problems extended beyond him, Brunell was pretty awful. But it was really good to see him play well on Saturday. I'm not saying he should start (not yet at least) but as long as he is a Redskin I don't know why anyone wouldn't want him to succeed. Might be time to change that name to Nemo Broughton Fan Club, or maybe Ethan Albright Fan Club. Ethan needs some lovin

Re: At least they threw downfield!
Also, Rufus Brown had 2 costly penalties in the red zone and was getting beat left and right as well.

Re: At least they threw downfield!
The 5 20yd plays were not executed by the skins 1st team offense. Thats something people seem to be ignoring. I realize the 1st team O does not want to show too much in preseason but they do need to show something, anything so the players can begin to believe the offense will be successful and get some confidence in the coaching staff.

Re: At least they threw downfield!
the way i look at it is, better our line does, more fuel it give the fire that is Clinton portis, and only reason i am so gitty about the line is because it was the best d-line in the league. if the way that our o-line played directly translates to yards then CP is getting a HAIL AMOUNT

Re: At least they threw downfield!
Again, I am not saying it is not great news about the line, but if our line was that manhandling, why could we not get into a groove on O? Look I think we all know our D is going to be fine, but we had nothing in the first half going well.
Portis sat out and a couple of players did not play, but we should have scored at least 10pts in the first half and could not get it done... It is the first preseason game, but it is time for PR to step up and make some plays. I could care less what Brunell did against 3rd stringers...
