They do make a lot of nice drop tiles that don't look like an office building. He has a good point about accessibility to the plumbing.
My finished basement has drywall on the ceiling and it does look better. It's a choice of how much risk you want to take. How old is your plumbing and what kind? Have you ever had an issue with it? If I HAD to do a suspended ceiling, I'd go with something like this:
