Re: Post your cold remedies
First, this is a great idea to post! Especially since I seem to get about 10 colds a year, at least when I lived in Nashville. My remedy recently has been pretty much just like GMScud's....Zicam as soon as I feel funny (I like the nasal swabs), Nyquil liquid at night (if it looks like it's getting bad), and drink liquids all day....water, gatorade, tea, and maybe a couple of red bull and vodka's

Re: Post your cold remedies
Alcohol definitely makes you sleep better (or at least fall asleep faster), but as far as the immune system is concerned- stay away while you're sick. Not to mention if you're taking other medicines, since mixing them with alcohol is so so so bad for your liver and kidneys.
Look, I'll be the first one at the bar to tip a few when I'm feeling well, but if it's night time and you're sick and feel like shit, just take a dose and a half of nyquil and you'll be out like a light. No need to drink. That is, unless you don't have nyquil in the house but you do have booze. If that's the case, take 2-3 shots and call it a night!

Re: Post your cold remedies
Basically there is no miracle cure. Nothing beats getting plenty of rest and fluids and some good ol' chicken soup.

Re: Post your cold remedies
I remember in college when I would get a headcold I would down a pitcher of OJ in the course of about an hour. I doubt it actually did anything to get rid of the cold but it usually had a nice placebo effect.
Hot showers are also a must.

Re: Post your cold remedies
I'm bumping this thread again for a few reasons:
1) because it's Cold/Flu season again 2) We have new members since this original post who may have their own holistic/home remedies and I'm always willing to try new things (as long as they don't cost an arm and a leg) 3) Because I swear to God I have the swine flu.

Re: Post your cold remedies
One thing to do -- cut down on sugar intake. Sugar depresses the immune system. (something to keep in mind as flu season arrives)
Click this link, then scroll down to the subheading which reads "How Sugar Harms" SUGAR |

Re: Post your cold remedies
Yeah, I can't really say that I follow this advice. The other day I went to the grocery store to get a dozen glazed donuts for breakfast for my kids. I wound up eating half the box myself.
That's okay though -- I won't have anymore donuts for at least 3 or 4 months. |

Re: Post your cold remedies
I used to just keep enough alcohol in my body so that nothing else could possibly live there and I would never get sick; unfortunately, it was getting to the point where I couldn't live there either.
