I thought Sam Bradford was supposed to be the injury prone one?

I say we merge this with the Favre thread and ask the critical question "If the Vikings make the playoffs or win the Super Bowl, will the Vikings re-sign Favre, release Tarvaris Jackson, who then signs with the Cardinals, who trade John Skelton to the Lions, who reach an injury settlement with Stafford and let him go whereby Stafford is then picked up by the Vikings?"

That just sucks for the Lions. Imagine finally finding a good, possibly great franchise QB and then going thru this. Wow. How long have they been w/out a legit QB? They've never had one.

He's taken a couple of really hard blows to his shoulder. The play on Sunday that re-injured it says to me that he was probably brought back too soon.

He's a serious talent. No way his career is over as a starter.

Agree, Stafford certainly has the makings of a great. Its a big loss to the lions and the league if it is a career ender, it really sucks for Stafford. I admire the Lions for what they have done to get him and develop him. I wish we would take note.

Lets hope he is able to recover and continue his career in top form.

This guy is just injury prone. His season is already over and he's barely palyed. Too early to write him off but they better have some solid back ups behind him. Hill was really playing well before he got hurt.

It's a shame for the Lions. They are a much better team with Stafford, although Shaun Hill did a good job as a back up. It's too bad that Megatron's best years are being wasted by these unfortunate situations. I hope Stafford recovers and is able to have a good career, he seems to have the talent for it.

Re: Is Stafford's career as a starter over???

I said this to my roommate (Lions fan), but I think the Lions have to honestly and truly move forward as if Stafford isn't their franchise quarterback and they need to acquire one in the offseason to lead the team.

It's by far the most difficult conclusion they could possibly make, and there's nothing to suggest Stafford can't be a top level quarterback in their offensive scheme. But alternative to this is to wait until next year when Stafford is healthy and then find out if he can lead them to the postseason.

Windows of opportunity in the NFL are very, very short. For the Lions, their window as a true contender in the NFC just opened. 2-6 is probably a death sentence in terms of making the playoffs this year: getting back to 8-8 (which is the 09 Titans best case scenario) probably isn't good enough. But with that window open and with the need to capitalize with Kyle VandenBosch and Jeff Backus and Dominic Raiola and Nate Burleson are all still contributors in a delicate balance, I think waiting for Stafford to lead them is the wrong move.

One that could pay off, but still I think the wrong move.

Det. has some real nice young players...I think they're going to be around for a while...Stafford, Best, Suh, Petigrew and Johnson to name a few.

The counter example would probably be the Texans.

Not to say that Schaub is the problem there: he's not. But the Texans defense was only briefly a decent defense. And the Texans had a few coaching mishaps and probably missed a small window to make the postseason between 2008 and 2009. Right now, the AFC is likely too strong and their defense too weak to win with that core.

They can theoretically keep Schaub and Johnson and Daniels and Foster around, and build around Mario Williams and Amobi Okoye, but the window where they can win with an elite passing game is probably past. That's what I think may happen to Detroit if they try to wait out Stafford. The good young players are going to be there, but they are playing well as a team for the first time in a decade. They've got to get through that window right now.

When you are the league's most improved team, as the Lions may be, the last thing you want to do is wait for the rest of the league to catch up to make a real push at the postseason.

Re: Is Stafford's career as a starter over???

I'm not even sure if I would call stafford injury prone.. it seems his shoulder just keeps getting re-injured, which might suggest they brought him back too soon/had some bad luck. I think after he sits the rest of the year out and works hard in the offseason, he'll come back and play a full season next year (barring the lockout...). He's a very promising young quarterback; I don't think the lions should be looking at him as a lost cause because of this injury thing....
