He missed most last year most important playoff time, and now he overshadowed .Take less money, for less work. Or maybe for once the Skins can try to get a draft pick for next year and not pissing those away too.
The only reason Patten missed the playoffs is because the Skins decided to out him on injury reserve. Patten did not have to TD's as whats his name said he had 2 completions over 20 yards which is right beside th TD stats. Such great reporting. I think Patten had an off year and if you go back and look at his number over the past six years they are good for a number 3 WR and ok for a 2. I think Patten will be more than motivated to come back this year and put up some good number and we may see more of him in the game plan.

Re: Pastabelly thinks Patten will get axe

My take on all of this is that Patten will not be on the field that much, which could mean he has less chance of an injury and therefore might make it for 16 games. It would be great to have a veteran in the 4th WR position if someone like Moss or Lloyd or El gets hurt. Some of you may seem to forget that while guys like Moss and Lloyd are durable, last year was the first year that both of them started and/or played in 16 games (in a while). Any WR can be subject to injury like we saw with Patten last year. We need depth at WR, and I think Gibbs and Snyder saw that last year regardless of whither or not Patten is over paid. If Moss or Lloyd goes down to injury for several games in 06, we are all going to be glad we have a $1 million back-up who can step in and not cost the Skin much in production. Having to bring in Jacobs and Farris just killed them last year.

I definitely agree that depth is key at WR especially after last year, but Patten is getting alot of jack for a 4th WR. Given his age and contract he could be gone especially if a free agent hits the wire that could fill a bigger need.

Matty, I would agree with you on the "better free agent being available" thing, if we can find a good one. But the Skins have done a pretty good job IMO of filling in our weaknesses so far. I don't know what player is going to jump out after the June 1 deadline that we could afford that would be better than keeping Patten. I just don't see that senerio happening.

I agree, it would have to be a surprise cut, maybe a quality offensive lineman or something. We'll see.

We stand to loose however if we do cut him because of the bonus we signed him too last season.
good point, if he doesn't play spec. teams then somebody's gotta take up that slack. Usually a 4th wr is expected to play ST. Plus, the $ isn't as much since we're now into a new CBA & prices have all been inflated.
I see Patten making a few clutch catches this year. I have a feeling that the staff will want him around for his vet. leadership & practice habits, which I've read are pretty good. They're takin a chance on Loyd's personality & work ethic, so maybe havin patten around will be a good influence & also let him know that a competent backup is ready to take his place.

they're keeping wynn at double his worth (as a starter) to be a backup. if you can overpay that much for quality DL depth, than patten's pay is chump change in comparision. He said that he doesn't want out, he's here to stay, so there's no reason to dump him right now.

You're comparing different positions, we don't have nearly the depth at DE that we do at WR, making Wynn more valuable, plus he can play DT which increases his value.

If we're going to run the one-back, 3-WR set a lot, I'd say we're just as deep at WR as we are at DE.

You need a decent 4th WR if you're going to run 3 WR sets all the time. Do you really want Taylor Jacobs or old man Thrash out there again? We've seen what they do, they don't work.

Money's not an issue right now, it just comes down to whether or not there's an O-lineman out there who we'd be better off with instead of Patten. Patten can at least still threaten a defense with his speed. Chances of being a June 1 cut are almost nill, and I'd be pissed if we dumped him without signing someone else that brings value.

Re: Pastabelly thinks Patten will get axe

To me, I'd rather have "old man" (younger than Patten) Thrash as the 4th wideout since he's also a special teams demon. Patten could be a huge waste sitting there as the #4 guy.

Re: Pastabelly thinks Patten will get axe

how can quality depth ever be considered a waste? what else are we going to do with the money? cut him loose and just sit on it?

he hasn't asked to be cut, so he should stay. I rather keep WRs that can actually play WR if the need ever arises. we'll keep at least 5, so thrash can stay too, but i NEVER want to see jacobs or farris on the field in an actual competitive game ever again.

jacobs, some crappy rookie camp scrub that can be put on the PS instead. if we're keeping 5 WRs, its pretty easy to see who they'd be. if we're only keeping 4, i rather have patten than thrash (even though i like thrash, the question of who could actually help your team if they needed to sub in is pretty easy to answer).

There's nothing wrong with quality depth, but how far down the depth chart can you go with that quality? I'd argue you don't want your #4 or #5 WR to be making the kind of money that Patten is making.

I'm not advocating cutting Patten come June 1 for the simple reason of how much he makes, but if there is a surprise cut from another team I can certainly understand the rationale behind letting him go in order to help our depth elsewhere where it's needed more.
