Re: Pastabelly thinks Patten will get axe
My take on all of this is that Patten will not be on the field that much, which could mean he has less chance of an injury and therefore might make it for 16 games. It would be great to have a veteran in the 4th WR position if someone like Moss or Lloyd or El gets hurt. Some of you may seem to forget that while guys like Moss and Lloyd are durable, last year was the first year that both of them started and/or played in 16 games (in a while). Any WR can be subject to injury like we saw with Patten last year. We need depth at WR, and I think Gibbs and Snyder saw that last year regardless of whither or not Patten is over paid. If Moss or Lloyd goes down to injury for several games in 06, we are all going to be glad we have a $1 million back-up who can step in and not cost the Skin much in production. Having to bring in Jacobs and Farris just killed them last year.

Re: Pastabelly thinks Patten will get axe
I definitely agree that depth is key at WR especially after last year, but Patten is getting alot of jack for a 4th WR. Given his age and contract he could be gone especially if a free agent hits the wire that could fill a bigger need.

I see Patten making a few clutch catches this year. I have a feeling that the staff will want him around for his vet. leadership & practice habits, which I've read are pretty good. They're takin a chance on Loyd's personality & work ethic, so maybe havin patten around will be a good influence & also let him know that a competent backup is ready to take his place. |

Re: Pastabelly thinks Patten will get axe
they're keeping wynn at double his worth (as a starter) to be a backup. if you can overpay that much for quality DL depth, than patten's pay is chump change in comparision. He said that he doesn't want out, he's here to stay, so there's no reason to dump him right now.

You need a decent 4th WR if you're going to run 3 WR sets all the time. Do you really want Taylor Jacobs or old man Thrash out there again? We've seen what they do, they don't work. Money's not an issue right now, it just comes down to whether or not there's an O-lineman out there who we'd be better off with instead of Patten. Patten can at least still threaten a defense with his speed. Chances of being a June 1 cut are almost nill, and I'd be pissed if we dumped him without signing someone else that brings value.

Re: Pastabelly thinks Patten will get axe
To me, I'd rather have "old man" (younger than Patten) Thrash as the 4th wideout since he's also a special teams demon. Patten could be a huge waste sitting there as the #4 guy.

Re: Pastabelly thinks Patten will get axe
how can quality depth ever be considered a waste? what else are we going to do with the money? cut him loose and just sit on it?
he hasn't asked to be cut, so he should stay. I rather keep WRs that can actually play WR if the need ever arises. we'll keep at least 5, so thrash can stay too, but i NEVER want to see jacobs or farris on the field in an actual competitive game ever again. |

I'm not advocating cutting Patten come June 1 for the simple reason of how much he makes, but if there is a surprise cut from another team I can certainly understand the rationale behind letting him go in order to help our depth elsewhere where it's needed more. |
