That's the thing about a restructure, there isn't less money involved. A paycut involves less money, but a restructure does not. Portis is owed $3.5 million in base salary this year. The Redskins could clear $2.0 - $2.5 million in cap space just by saying hey Clinton, of the $3.5 million you're scheduled to make, we'll give you $3.0 million up front as a signing bonus, and we'll give you the other $500K as the vet minimum base salary. He'll be like you mean I get a big check up front instead of spread out over the year in game checks? Where do I sign?

There's no incentive to deny a restructure.

That's usually what they do, but I also think that just takes the pressure off of the cap for this season. It usually means that future cap hits are just gonna get worse. That one I need Schneed for...

Yep that's how it works.

Uhh... Gibbs never tells the whole story. What makes you think that this situation is any different? This is the same guy that said they were drafting offensive weapons for Ramsey a couple years ago, and picks a corner and quarterback. This year, he's been saying that the problems had nothing to do with lack of communication, and everything is structured perfectly within the organization, but players are running to reporters talking about how some coaches don't even speak to others, players on the same unit have different meetings, etc.

As much as I would like to be wrong in this instance, I'm 99% sure that Portis is going to be gone, especially when people throw ridiculous packages around, like a Pro Bowl corner and the #2 overall pick.

Agreed, but apparently in Washington, running for a lot of yards between the 20's overshadows fumbling in the red zone...

I think if they are going to take a deal for him, that's about as good as any to take. However, Dre Bly is getting old. He's 29, I thought he was about 2 years older than that, but still...a 29 year old corner for a 25 year old running back, doesn't seem like that great of a deal. However, the #2 has gotta be tempting.

I just like Clinton too much and think he's too good for them to trade him...I'm gonna be pissed if they do.

I doubt it will happen. As much as people want to speculate....Portis will be a Redskin for awhile.

How quickly everyone forgets how he practically carried the team on his back during our 5 game winning streak in '05.

You can say what you want about Betts doing the same, but the difference is that we won games w/ CP and Betts essentially contributed to our losses with his fumbles.

Portis > Betts. End of story.

Yes, you're right. If he's scheduled to make $3.5 million in base salary, and they restructure so that $3.0 million becomes signing bonus, then the signing bonus gets allocated over the remaining years of the contract.

Portis is under contract until 2011. That's 5 more seasons. So take the $3 million bonus and divide it by 5 years. That's $600K allocated to each season.

In 2007, Portis would count the $500K base salary, plus $600K for the allocated signing bonus, or $1.1 million in total (not considering roster bonus and previous signing bonus). So instead of counting the $3.5 million all this year, he's going to count $1.1 million, saving us $2.4 million in 2007 by restructuring.

In 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011, his cap number goes up by $600K each year.

You can see how it works. Reduce the cap hit now, spread it out over the remaining years. The more years the player has left, the more the future hit is spread out. With the salary cap going up by like $7 million a year these days, adding $600K to a player's cap number really isn't a big deal at all, and that's exactly why the 'Skins never encounter the "cap hell" the pundits are always saying they'll run into.

I'm 99.99999% sure he's staying. Suffice it to say, one of us is going to be VERY surprised to be wrong. We'll see who's right.

Note to self: make fun of Southpaw when Portis suits up for the 'Skins in 2007.

Which is odd considering Gibbs is such a nut over that.

I'm pretty sure that 90% of us are against trading Portis. I sure as hell don't want Portis to be traded, but I've also been a fan of this team long enough to know that this is exactly the type of retarded shit they'd do, and then find some way to spin it in the Redskins media machine, to make everyone hate Portis...

As I said, I'd love nothing more to be wrong in this situation, because I would have a hard time stomaching the fact that Betts is THE guy. A plate full of deep fried crow would go down much easier.

I still think he's gone though...

I totally agree with you. He was the main reason they made the playoffs last year. He put the team on his back and they won football games. Him and the D, at least. Anyway, as much as I would like to believe Joe Gibbs, I just can't do it. I've been bitten by this organization too many times to buy into what he's saying.

Gibbs hasn't been upfront with fans about a lot of things. Also, what if he said that they had every intention of trading Clinton Portis? Then you end up in the Champ Bailey situation where other teams are holding all the cards cause they know Clinton doesn't wanna come back cause you said you were trading him. The best way to trade a guy is to publicly deny his availibility and then privately shop him all over the league.
