As much as I would like to be wrong in this instance, I'm 99% sure that Portis is going to be gone, especially when people throw ridiculous packages around, like a Pro Bowl corner and the #2 overall pick. |

I'd like to see CP traded for draft picks which is what this team really needs to rebuild its foundation.

Re: Rumored Portis Trade offered FROM! the Lions
And a trade would never happen post-June 1. First off, the draft would have already happened by then, so any scenario involving picks would be out the window.
Secondly, teams just don't do that. They like to get new guys in the fold earlier so they know what holes they need to fill in FA and the draft.

Re: Rumored Portis Trade offered FROM! the Lions
Just for discussion, i would hate to see CP go b/c he is one of the "core" guys. It's not going to happen though. This organization has been blasted this year about letting "core" guys go.
Now, all of the overpaying, questionable FO moves the FO makes have left us w/ a severe lack of talent on D, essentially no draft, and no depth on D. With that being said if the skins did this they might be-would be in better shape. They would fill the need in CB. They would be able to get some major young talent on D. W/ the #2 & 6 pick we could keep one trade down into the lower 1st and get a 2nd most likely. 3 top picks for an aging D. Wow. Thoughts? This of course is w/out taking CAP #'s into account. |

If our FO would trade Portis away, I would think that I probably would take a year or two off from football....

Re: Rumored Portis Trade offered FROM! the Lions
Why do you assume that it was leaked that Portis is available? Isn't it possible that the rumor started based on speculation by others around the league?
That rumor started because people looked at Betts and said hey he's a starter. The Skins might want to think about trading Portis. That doesn't mean the Skins are thinking about it.

jones really hasnt lived up to expectations so far, portis would upgrade their running game big time, they do need a rb. jones has had 3 years and hasnt proven much. id go for trade 2 or 3 in this scenario, not #1

Re: Rumored Portis Trade offered FROM! the Lions
It would be hard to turn down a Portis for Bly and the number 2 pick scenario, but I would probably weigh-in on the "opposed" side of that one. Essentially it would constitute a trade of Champ and a 2nd rounder for Bly (with a 3-year Portis rental) and the second pick in the draft.
Still, I think Portis is too valuable to the team in too many ways to be traded. Add in the signal it sends to his teammates and I just think it's a bad plan. Before trading Portis, we would need a Hershel Walker type offer and I don't see anyone making such an offer.

Re: Rumored Portis Trade offered FROM! the Lions
I doubt it will happen. As much as people want to speculate....Portis will be a Redskin for awhile.
How quickly everyone forgets how he practically carried the team on his back during our 5 game winning streak in '05. You can say what you want about Betts doing the same, but the difference is that we won games w/ CP and Betts essentially contributed to our losses with his fumbles. Portis > Betts. End of story. |

Gibbs hasn't been upfront with fans about a lot of things. Also, what if he said that they had every intention of trading Clinton Portis? Then you end up in the Champ Bailey situation where other teams are holding all the cards cause they know Clinton doesn't wanna come back cause you said you were trading him. The best way to trade a guy is to publicly deny his availibility and then privately shop him all over the league. |

Re: Rumored Portis Trade offered FROM! the Lions
This trade only makes sense if the skins get the #2 pick without having to give back #6...and I doubt Detroit would do that. Otherwise why give up Portis for 4 spots in the draft and a 30 year old CB? Plus whatever gaurenteed money is left on Portis contract will hit the cap imediately if the skins trade him...meaning it would require a bunch of cuts and restructures just to make a trade possible. it's not happening...

Re: Rumored Portis Trade offered FROM! the Lions
Bottom line is it's doable. And I don't care what Gibbs says publicly, privately he has to, will listen to other offers. Especially ones that will line up #2 pick.
But like I said, it's possible a third party could get involved in a deal to make the pot sweeter for the Redskins. I think it's a 50/50 chance of it happening. I think in the end, I would rather have Portis suiting up in Burgundy and Gold in '07. |

With that said, how juicy does the pot have to get before it's okay to deal him out? Are there any teams that can meet that?
