Rumored Portis Trade offered FROM! the Lions
Well, I really didnt want to post this, because it seems soooooooo far fetched to me, but allegedly (I read this on ES) Tripple X reported that the LIONS OFFERED (just so no one is tearing the Skins front office apart for shopping Portis) a trade for Portis....
I've heard three different versions of this (which again, makes me think its false), but I'll break each one down. #1 Lions Get: Clinton Portis Redskins Get: Shaun Rogers (If the Redskins ever took that I'd probaboly kill myself, so that seems really unrealistic) #2 (The One Reported on Tripple X) Lions Get: Clinton Portis Redskins Get: Dre Bly, Lions #2 overall Draft Pick Now this one seems really far fetched to be offered to us. Portis really isnt worth that to another team (He's worth a lot to us, but in the market itself I personally dont think he's worth much more than a high second rounder). But if that was really offered to us, it'd be really stupid of the Lions... and honestly, it would be stupid of us not to take. Now Tafkas read somewhere else that it was reported that: Lions Get: Portis, #6 pick Redskins Get: Bly, #2 Pick, Lions 3rd Round Pick. Again, I really didnt want to give this more attention than it deserves, becuase I think all three are false, but if they allegedly reported it on Tripple X, I guess it deserves some attention. Personally, I'm the #1 guy for keeping Porits a Washington Redskin, because I think he is more valuable to this team than just about anyone....but it would be really hard to say no if the Lions offered Bly and the #2 pick for him (w/ us keeping 6).

NO!!!!! I am so sick of Trade Portis Threads...He is "THE CORE REDSKIN". If we trade him I will just puke. Trade Betts instead.

Fact of the matter is, everything is on the table for the Skins this year - everything. I know Gibbs will deny every rumor until he's blue in the face, but I have to believe even if these reports are false, everything has to be on the table this year.

Re: Rumored Portis Trade offered FROM! the Lions
Can someone please give clarification on what kind of salary cap hit we would take if we traded Portis? If we trade him before June 1st - do we have a huge deadcap hit in 2007? If we trade him post June 1st what would be the hits in the followng 2 years?
I just want to know even if the Redskins decided to trade him, can they really afford to do this at all? |

Could be a three way deal, if it is true. This is all wild speculation. But it could be a three way deal, to unload Kevin Jones to another team and bring in Portis. |

I haven't heard anything other than the rumors speculated on message boards.

Re: Rumored Portis Trade offered FROM! the Lions
Detroit could use Clinton Portis. Kevin Jones is a serviceable running back, but I don't know that I would call him "good." I think part of the problem he has is a pretty weak O Line. Also, he's never played 16 games and the past 2 years he's had his seasons cut short. Still, he only ran for 1000+ in his rookie season, since then, he hasn't cracked 700 yards. I think that's a pretty decent indictment of him.
Also, when one of the better running backs in the NFL is perceived to be available, everyone should be showing interest short of San Diego and KC. I'm not really all that surprised by the fact that the Lions would come after him and if I'm Washington, and actually looking to deal Portis, I would have to look twice at Bly and the 2nd overall. Then, they would have filled a need at corner (albeit a relatively old one) and have 2 picks in the top 6. They could shop for those or draft whoever they want. All that said, I'm gonna be insanely pissed if Clinton Portis gets traded this offseason. I will be irrate and wish I could turn off the love of the team. Finally, anyone think maybe Clinton rubbed the organization the wrong way with that interview? I don't mind what he said, but maybe Joe Gibbs/Cerrato/Snyder/Saunders did and might be a little more open to trading him than they were before. One other quick thing, just because Joe Gibbs categorically denied that they're trading Clinton holds very little water with me. He also said, going into the 05(?) draft that "we're gonna go get Patrick Ramsey some weapons" and then they picked Rogers and Campbell. |

I find it hard to believe we would trade CP only because of the cap situation. Especially if we're going to can Arch and/or Lloyd.

I'd like to see CP traded for draft picks which is what this team really needs to rebuild its foundation.

Trading him would hit us with a cap hit of $8.2 million in 2007. He's already on the books for $7.1 million in 2007 as it is, so it wouldn't be that much more to absorb. BUT, the Redskins have no intention of having him count $7.1 million in 2007: they'll restructure (he'll be willing) and give him what his contract calls for. That will reduce his cap number to something like $3 million, so really, the opportunity cost of trading Portis is like $5.2 million or something. If the 'Skins wanted to make this their major personnel move and not really make many other changes, they'd still be able to get rid of either Archuleta or Lloyd, but probably not both. I'd say the likelihood of all this happening is something like 0.00001%. Gibbs loves Portis, and with Duckett leaving, we can't just go with Betts as our #1 and have nobody behind him (Rock Cartwright does not count, he is not good enough).

I really doubt it. Gibbs seems to really love Portis and everyone knows he's an outspoken guy who speaks his mind. And it's not like he even said anything bad, he was just speaking the truth.
