Banks's list is horrible in other places also. I mean, it seems to be full of bias because young QBs with similar career projection are spread out all over the list and past-their prime vets are spread out as well. Why is Trent Green 7, and Mark Brunell 18. They are the same old, injury-riddled, still-efficient-when-healthy passer. Yet, 10 spots apart.

Re: Todd Collins: Best Backup QB in the NFL?

I don't care for Banks at all. I don't know what it is about him, maybe his history of misinformed columns that target the Redskins that I don't believe him to be an impartial journalist.

With that said, I think his choice of Collins as the best backup in the NFL is misguided because it's simply not the same offense and while I think Collins wouldn't kill us if forced to play, he's simply not as comfortable (to my surprise) in this offense.

Further, it seemed to me that Banks wasn't praising Collins as much as he was ripping the Redskins and implying there was dissension within the organization for Campbell being the starter.

Yes a hunch. Although not seen yet in real NFL action, preseason can be used as a tool to see a players strengths. Quinn has the mobility, arm, and strength that Collins does not Posses. And I like a quarterback who gets the ball out on time.

But I do agree with you that if Baltimore wanted a short term fix at QB (which is what they did with McNair), they could have gone out and got a Brunell, or a Kerry Collins, or a Griese, or a Leftwich, or a Culpepper, or a Sage Rosenfels, and they would be the overwhelming favorites in the AFC North. Not all of those guys are particularly great passers, but they are all known quantities who could win on a team with that kind of defense.
Collins has several good things still going for him. Big arm, he can make all the throws, he's durable, he's shown he can take a team to the Super Bowl and he's pretty accurate. He just can't get out of his own way. He needs a great line in front of him.

holy shit, i feel like im sitting in the middle of a kindergarden class as i read this. Does it really matter if he is THE best? Or isnt it good enough to know that as Matty said that someone is giving some props. Some of you put a whole lot of thought into your replys. And Im thinking to myself......hmmmm, this is a article about back-up QB's, and its like, oh nevermind, Im just gonna go finish my leftover chinese dinner. Matty your 100% right, you just cant win either way.

Collins also throws the ball away way too much...and takes way too many sacks (offensive line issues noted) for a guy who throws away as many passes as he does. Case in point, he's thrown a completion % of 60 or higher once in his career (excluding last years 82 attempts).

That's fine if he's consistently beating his completion percentage with his TD/INT ratio...but he isn't. He's 1 to 1 for his career (174 TDs, 172 INTs). The thrown away passes aren't preventing Collins from getting picked off...they're just stalling the offense.

He did well in relief of Young last year, and you could do worse to have Kerry Collins as your backup quarterback, but most teams have done better, IMO.

Fair enough, it's probably not worth the effort, but your demographic on this site is football fanatics: I don't know why you would expect anything different.

Who cares who the best backup is? The season is 8 days away, please pull up your skirt and get ready for some football.

Re: Todd Collins: Best Backup QB in the NFL?

I dont know where to rank Collins now that we have a new offense, before last yr would anybody have ranked him in the top 10? He might not have made the top 20 cut. Being in Houston I've got to see a lot of Sage and he would be my top backup,He's outplayed Schaub every opportunity hes gotten

that would be great,I'd love him too,but he cant stay healthy and its the classic case of being handed the job because you make more money when you havent proved anything or beat the backup out of the job

Schaub has had a very good preseason. I could see him having a big year.

didnt Danny Wuerfel have a pretty good preseason? lol
seriously,Schaub has looked good, but so has Sage.Yes Schaub could have a big yr if him and his receivers can stay healthy, but getting back to the point of the thread I think Sage is the best backup,Schaub has been handed the job because of the investment the Texans have in him, lucky for them sage is taking it and not complaining about it
