Anyways, it's been a little while since we've seen CP break games, and I just wanted to remind people. Plus, I thought that was a good CP vid.

Yes! I've been wanting the Denver CP for years now, i feel he's been underutilized here. I would love to see him back at 5 yards per carry

Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
Great CP vid. When he has a little space...he's one of the best. I like the sweeps and the QB fake left, kickout to CP right (it must have a name, i just don't know it). We need to see a little originality in the run game (on top of some assemblence of a passing game).

Underutilized? He's racked up a ton of carries here, probably too many in fact. I think he led the league in carries last year.

Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
People can dream all they want about the Portis of old but he's a different player now. I actually think he's a more complete back now vs when he was in Denver.

Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
A running back is only as good as his offensive line (with the exception of Barry Sanders). Portis gives us 100% on every play, and I doubt many would contest that. So for him to not be hitting 1500 to 2000 yards every season has a lot more to do with the o-line than it does with Portis himself.
I'd like to see us use him more as a receiver out of the backfield, but I think we use him too much on running plays. We had an amazing running game when Betts helped out more. All in all, he's a stud, and I am not worried about him at all. He's one of the few areas that don't need some work.

Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
15 more games genius.. He's nowhere close to being ready to even be a #2.
I know it's going to sound CRAZY to the proponents of 'Redskins Football' meaning 3 yards and a cloud of dust, but do you want to get CP going? Start the game-and drives-by THROWING THE FOOTBALL. The NFL today is a vertical league.. You've got to use the pass to set up the run.. Especially with our history, teams are expecting us to run, run, pass and they sit on that.. What happens when we play into that trend? 3 and out. Teams that come off the bus throwing (Philly, Dallas, NE, SD, Indy, even Pittsburgh!) are able to loosen up the defense, opening running lanes for their backs. One of the biggest things missing from the offense the past 5 years is the deep attempt, notice I didn't say completion. Percentages are against completing many deep balls, but 3 positive things can happen from a deep attempt. 1-A completion, 2-An interference call, 3-defensive coordinators and guys in the secondary know you aren't afraid to challenge deep. The only real negative is an interception, but that's a risk with any throw. Either way, if defensive coaches and players KNOW you're not throwing beyond 15 yards they will creep and crowd the line making running the ball nearly impossible. Portis is not Riggins-lite, as he was miscast to be the past 4 years, he's a back that operates best in space. He likes running inside, but not when there is a linebacker and safety clogging every gap it's going to make it impossible to get 4.5 YPC which he needs to regain his near elite status.

Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
I can't tell you how frustrated I get when I see 9 or 10 guys in the box and Portis getting hit in the backfield. It's such a waste of a great talent. As Portis mentioned in the WaPo article, we need to develop a passing game to develop a running game. Our O-line isn't dominant like the Vikes', but our passing attack is as anemic as the Vikes. Portis isn't going to average 4.5+ ypc until we fix one of those problems.

Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
I'm would like for CP to use all this wisdom on the field instead of in the press. I would really like for my "Leader", and highest paid player to lead by example in all phases of the business
"I wish I could go to a team for one week with the best offensive line, or the team with the best scheme, and switch places with their back and see how others would do in this system," Portis said, sitting on a couch the other day at Redskins Park. "I get a lot of touches with nowhere to run. I could see if I got all those touches and had some lanes, but there's nine or 10 men in the box. washingtonpost.com
