While obviously there needed to be a heavy penalty, I feel sorry for the players over this 14 year period that now suddenly never happened according to the record book. Some players are rightfully pissed off that the blood and sweat they gave up for the university and subsequently the NCAA to make millions of dollars, now meant nothing because of the faults of a handful of people. Punishing those not involved just doesn't seem fair whatsoever. Just alter the record book in regards to JP. I truly feel sorry for the poor boys who had their lives forever changed by a monster and those who didn't fight hard enough for the right thing to be done, but these other boys shouldn't be punished as well. This whole situation sucks and there was never going to be a "right way" for this to get made right.

No but I'm sure he had to know when he took the job that there probably were going to be sanctions. Unless everyone at Penn State lied to him too, and told him it wasn't a big concern and not to worry about it. I'm doubtful that that happened but the current group of leadership at Penn State hasn't struck me as very smart in how they're handling this whole thing.

Quite honestly, I have no sympathy for him as he signed up prior knowing that something was going to happen. Unless he was a complete idiot, he had to know the football program was going to take a hit.

You can't punish the program and those in charge without affecting the current staff and players. This should not be part of the equation. They all have the chance to move somewhere else. O'Brien knew about these problems coming in.

The kids are allowed to transfer and not sit out, which is fair and I'm glad the NCAA is making an exception for them.

$60 million fine. That's huge. That is larger than the annual operating academic budgets at some schools. Everyone at Penn State down to the groundskeepers and custodial staff will be affected by that.

I'm not complaining about the penalty. The NCAA should have thrown the book at PSU and it did. But to say the penalty does not affect innocent others is not really true.

Among the penalties, the Big Ten says Penn State will not be allowed to share in the conference’s bowl revenues while it is banned from the postseason by the NCAA. Here are the conference’s additional sanctions on Penn State:

Censure: The accepted findings support the conclusion that our colleagues at Penn State, individuals that we have known and with whom we have worked for many years, have egregiously failed on many levels—morally, ethically and potentially criminally. They have failed their great university, their faculty and staff, their students and alumni, their community and state—and they have failed their fellow member institutions in the Big Ten Conference. For these failures, committed at the highest level of the institution, we hereby condemn this conduct and officially censure Penn State.

Probation: The Big Ten Conference will be a party to the Athletic Integrity Agreement referenced in the NCAA release, and will work closely with the NCAA and Penn State to ensure complete compliance with its provisions over the 5 year term of the Agreement.

Ineligibility: As referenced in the NCAA release, Penn State’s football team will be ineligible for postseason bowl games. It will also be ineligible for Big Ten Conference Championship Games for four years, a period of time that runs concurrently with the NCAA postseason bowl ban imposed this morning.

Fine: Because Penn State will be ineligible for bowl games for the next four years, it will therefore be ineligible to receive its share of Big Ten Conference bowl revenues over those same four years. That money, estimated to be approximately $13 million, will be donated to established charitable organizations in Big Ten communities dedicated to the protection of children.

^^ Nope. The program should be shut down and those contracts should be honored. Unless it can be shown that they somehow knew of the specific issues, their contracts should be enforceable as they did nothing to violate them.

Here's where I think the NCAA arguably got it right. The football program brings in a lot of revenue and employment for that town. Shutting down the program would have had an economic shock throughout that community.

On balance these penalties are harsh and severe. Losing 60 scholarships all but ensures that the program is basically irrelevant for many years to come. More fines to be levied by the Big Ten.

I don't think the stigma of being associated with Penn State should be underestimated.
