Re: If the Seahawks released Matt Hasselback should the Skins make a run at signing him?
Kind of surprised about all the interest over Matt. Nothing personal but I could give two-shits where he plays next year. The only thing I ever think about hearing his name is the insane hit Smoot put on him in last year's playoff game. Hasselback's leg was a giant bruise (he looked pathetic against Green Bay the next week). Fond memory of Smoot... maybe he deserves another year. As nickel? And he has to practice more or something, i don't know but i get the feeling Smoot parties his arse off.

A healthy MH would be an improvement in places like Minny, Chicago, and Detroit. Seattle is getting a new head coach, so who knows what direction Mora Jr. will go. I think MH would be serviceable here as a back up and nothing else, a more talented Todd Collins.

So Ruskell said yesterday that Hasselbeck isn't going anywhere

Re: If the Seahawks released Matt Hasselback should the Skins make a run at signing him?
If he comes here and there is fair open competition for starting QB then he will be the starter. He's a proven pro bowl QB that still has a bunch of good years in front of him. He's not Bruenell who was obviously finished when the Skins picked him up. JC hasnt really shown anything and its still not clear he ever will. That said, I'm not sure the Skins should sign him. For some reason it really bothers me that the Skins cant draft and develop their own players and always have to rely on FAs to attempt to bolster the team. This method isnt working and successful teams dont really do it that way.

That's actually a really good comparison that never really crossed my mind. So, thanks, I guess.

Re: If the Seahawks released Matt Hasselback should the Skins make a run at signing him?
I think there was a year (2004) where Brunell was playing through an arm injury, and then he hurt his knee late in 2005, but I don't see where his arm just stopped working. I mean, even this year in the preseason for NO, he's still got a lot of zip on the ball.
He started 37 games here, including the 2005 playoffs, and very rarely was a lack of arm strength ever an issue, if I remember correctly. Last I remember the guy was setting completion records while Brandon Lloyd was on the field running God-knows-what. And yeah, isn't Hasselbeck's back injury every bit as bad as whatever Brunell had that forced him out of Jacksonville (Leftwich-itis?)

But yeah, I see Hasselbeck as a guy in decline, and he can probably hang on for 5 more years in the NFL, but I don't think he'll play like he did in 2005 anytime in the near future. Perhaps in a more powerful offense, he could be successful.

I shouldn't have let this thread get this far.
Unless there's major progress towards a CBA extension, we can't afford Hasselbeck without decimating our team at numerous other positions, cutting some of the vets we have and replacing them with bums or rookies. The salary cap situation doesn't practically allow for it.
