Re: Portis Out To Prove Redskins Wrong

Portis really P'd me off at times, but the most electrifying players often do. Regardless of anyone's feelings about him, this guy is one of the all-time Redskin greats; he's second all-time in rushing yards, behind only the great John Riggins. Regarding his release, he said that the Redskins were going in a different direction and that it was the right direction. That's a classy thing to say, and it doesn't bother me that he wants to play the Skins twice a year to prove what they gave up. That's the way motivated players are.

More than anything though, I'm going to miss his backfield blocking. He was vicious in the backfield and seemed to love blocking as much as carrying the ball. Those kind of receivers are few and far between, and Portis didn't just love it, he had a skill for it. When Campbell used to drop back on third and long, I was always excited to watch the block(s) that Portis made. Most of the time they were the most exciting part of the play since Campbell would just dump the ball off five yards short of the first down. Anyway, pardon my rambling (I'm enjoying some Green Flash Brewing Co. West Coast IPA), but no one gave more effort on the field than Portis. Good luck to him.

"Some drama" this guy put the "D" in drama. Riggins is a HOFamer that helped produce winners....Portis didn't even want to practice. I won't detract from his efforts but, if I had to choose between the two it wouldn't even be a contest.

Very good post. It seems that nowadays fans just read the headlines and jump on the boards to scream bloody murder. And don't read the whole story, the first sentence I bolded in your post says a lot in my opinion, and I'm sure not many people have read it.

No player is going to say "yeah I'm washed up and the team should've cut me". I do hope he gets an opportunity somewhere outside the NFC East. I mean LT was thought to be washed up and he ended up having a decent year with the Jets.

Portis didn't sit out a year or get piss drunk in front of a Supreme Court Justice. Riggins also sat out many practices during the week to be able to play on Sunday. When we recall Riggins sucking on oxygen on the sidelines we think of a warrior, had that been Portis we'd say he's lazy and out of shape. Also, it wasn't really until Riggins' 7th year that the Redskins were real winners.

I love what Riggo brought on the field and I'm not trying to take anything away from him, but I'm not about to put him on a higher pedestal than need be in order to make Portis look worse.

Portis had a hard enough time getting on the field to play FOR us, how's he going to play against us?

Re: Portis Out To Prove Redskins Wrong

You guys are all right. How can Portis think he's going to shock us? I mean i understand his mentality, but everything he is capable of we have already seen.

Fragile? Check

No breakaway speed? Check

Easy to bring down? Check

Stumbles over his own feet? Check.

No offense CP but you aren't going to be lighting up anybody's "d".......

Re: Portis Out To Prove Redskins Wrong

Why are we trashing Portis? Yes, Portis made a comment about proving Redskins wrong, but nothing more.. In fact, he even said that Redskins is going in right direction with Shanahan - I don't see any negativity in that. Portis got released before his contract expired; it's like a freelance signing with a company to work for x years but then the company decides they don't need him/her anymore, they tell that person "Sorry, we don't need you anymore" and cut the contract early. You would think that person would want to sign with another company and prove that company wrong? That is exactly what Portis is trying to do..

Even though Portis slacked off at practices, partied, and goofed around (even we enjoyed it). He gave it all on the field, he ruined his body for Redskins aka Gibbs. He didn't complain about it. Gibbs could have used two system with Betts, aside the fumbling problem, he was a pretty good runner. But Gibbs didn't, and it practically ran Portis to early retirement. Not that I'm saying he will retire before this season but he will retires few years earlier than he probably would if he wasn't used so much.

Edit: It's all on media, they always take players' comments out of context and twist it around.

All on media? Please. Where in the article does it trash Portis?

I didn't mean that the media is trashing Portis - I could see why you did from my post, I typed it quickly without thinking.. I'm speaking in general, that media often takes something out of context and twist it around.. Only part of trashing Portis I am concerned is us.. Some of fans are trashing Portis as if he's a bad player.

Re: Portis Out To Prove Redskins Wrong

Portis will go down as one of the Redskins greats. Its was not his fault we did not win many games during his time in DC. He gave his all when he was on the field on game day. Portis is right we never had a franchise QB when he was here in his prime. I would love to keep Portis around for another year but he makes to much money and I know he would not want to take a big pay cut to stay here so we let him go. Good Luck Portis hope you dont play for any NFC East teams.
