Agreed, but Thomas knows the offense, and has a history with the coaching staff. One last point, there is no reason to have a veteran running back taking the practice reps from the young players.

Not sure why people are already complaining about the running. Guess what? That's not what we're going to do best. It is what it is. I wouldn't be surprised if Cousins has around 650 attempts.

Question. Do the Patriots worry about their running game? Never. Obviously KC isn't Tom Brady, but I really expect him to pick up where he left off at the last half of 15 and take it to another level of play.

We're definitely a passing team now, but we still need to run more effectively than last year. No reason why that can't happen.

New England has a def & ST that don't give up more then 20 pt/game too.
We haven't proven that we have that in our tool belt just yet.

We will face some better teams this year (tougher schedule) & being one dimensional against good teams usually isn't a good game plan.

It would be nice to be able to extend some drives, eat some clock & keep the defense off the field.

Callahan is the best o-line coach in the league. What he's done with Pass Pro is amazing here. But he also developed Dallas into a top rushing attack. I just can't understand why it hasn't translated here quite yet.

I know this is heresy, should his running schemes be simplified?

Lavau said in an interview during camp they had about 13 different run schemes:

Redskins Audio | ESPN 980

It's the interview from 8-9-16.

Cooley seems to suggest that it might be tough to master that many schemes.

All of our starters are going into the second year of this offense with Callahan as the Oline coach and run game coordinator.

They shouldn't have to pause and think as much as they were in Atlanta at the snap of the ball.

His line performed well in Dallas and, in theory, that should translate here. But, we really don't know how many different schemes he was allowed to run in Dallas and how complicated those were.

New England was 7th in the league in rushing.... 151 yards per game

Re: Plus and Minus for First Exhibition Game

1. Schreff and Moses working together on the right side, both coming off their 1st year as starters
2. Lauvao coming back healthy and starting at left guard
3. Matt Jones entering the fold with a year experience and as "the man"
4. Whole team confident after a solid second half playoff run
5. Another year to assimilate in Callahan, mcvay and gruden's offense

I like our chances of being a stronger running team. My biggest fear is depth at the position

Re: Plus and Minus for First Exhibition Game

Running back update:

Seventh-rounder Keith Marshall has been working as the Redskins' No. 4 running back at practice this week following his brutal preseason opener.

He's now behind Matt Jones, Chris Thompson, and undrafted rookie "Robert Kelley." Marshall received five carries against the Falcons last Thursday night, but turned them into negative-one yards rushing. The offensive line was part of the problem, but Marshall showed a tendency to try to bounce every run outside. At 5'11/222 with 4.31 speed, Marshall looks the part, but he's in a fight for a roster spot, even after GM Scot McCloughan talked him up nine days ago.

per the Washington post.

watch that dude in bold....training camp hero full effect!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll be interested to see if Marshall can do anything against 3rd/4th stringers like Kelley did. Where's my boy Mack Brown in that rotation?!

Gearing up for his future employment by standing in front of a mirror and repeating "Would you like fries with that?" over and over and over ...

well, 13 schemes would explain some confusion. sometimes it pays to dumb it down a bit. I'm sure they'll get it figured out- but I would feel much better if it started sooner rather than later.

Marshall can go to Canada / CFL where the field is 65 yards wide.... he can run 30 or 40 yards to gain 1 yard
