Looks like we've got a lot of contract issues on the horizon

Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs

My biggest concern from that article came from this paragraph:

"Before the voluntary workouts began, Campbell had wanted to work out with wide receivers Antwaan Randle El, Santana Moss and Brandon Lloyd, but the dates never materialized. Moss said he hoped to reschedule with Campbell during the six weeks between the mandatory June minicamp and the start of training camp July 27."

I'm glad Santana is going to reschedule with Jason, but it looks like Jason was willing to put in the extra effort to improve during the offseason, but his corp of receivers weren't. I remember hearing a report about Carson Palmer & Ocho Cinco, after Cinci went 8-8 and missed the playoffs, analyzed what Peyton Manning and his receivers did to get to where they were at, and it was simply putting in extra time to run routes individually with receivers to get their chemistry tight. So, Carson, Chad, and TJ did that as well in the offseason, and their air attack exploded the next season. I wish Jason could've done that with his receivers as well. Lord knows Brandon Lloyd needs to put in the extra tme running routes.

That would have been nice but at the same time it's not a huge deal.

It's the offseason... I don't think we realize sometimes that these guys have lives away from football and they need their down time too.

Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs

Fair enough, I think of all the OTA and off-season stuff, the timing and route running of the passing game probably benefit the most. More than any other aspect of the game, the passing game requires two particular players to understand each other. The off-season route running probably does allow the QB and receivers to talk more and get a feel for each other's nuances.

Even that, however, can't duplicate game speed or conditions.

At the same time, it will probably be more helpful to work on it after minicamp and before Training Camp as it lets them be that much more prepared prior to the opening of camp.

Springs has been a leader in the locker room the whole time that he has been on the team. He has never been in trouble. He participates in the community, he shows up on the local Redskins shows and he represents the team well on the various media outlets. He has restructured his contract, in the past, when the team needed salary cap relief. Last year, he hurt his groin. He rushed back to get back on the field because the team desperately needed him. Although never 100%, he did his best to give the team a chance. Well, he never healed and then he was hurt again later in the year. During the offseason, the Redskins ask him to restructure and essentially take a pay cut because he was hurt last year. Realizing that he held the leverage due to the shortage of quality corners, he decides that they can pay him his salary or let him go where he will certainly get a large signing bonus. Since he wouldn't restructure, the front office did everything they could to get rid of him but there have not been any legitimate offers.

I would take a whole team of Shawn Springs. This is a prime example of why players should think long and hard about restructuring. They are holding his high cap number over his head. The cap number that is so high because he helped them out in the past.
Agreed. Springs is not going to take a pay cut. He has been a great leader and defines what we call a "core redskin." I hope we keep him at least for this year.

It's a non story. OTA's are optional and every nfl team has players that don't show.

Hey now, we can't help it if we're always gettin' busy.

Hence the perils of browsing a site with such ballers.

A great deal of the running game and things like that are just the running backs instinct of where the holes are, and how to react to defenders.

As a receiver, the only instincts are basically how to get around getting bumped. After that, It's run your route crisp, recollect from film where you have to be, and know your QB.

I think you're right to assume QB/WR timing is the most important.

He doesn't have any roster bonuses or workout bonuses remaining in his contract, the only money coming his way is the base salary.

So what's he going to do, hold out for 3 years? Play 6 games each season to get credit for a season played? His base salaries are subject to him being here and playing. If he doesn't play for us, he gives up his base salary. So what, you think he's going to give up his source of income for the next 3 years?

Hell no. The guy will be here when it counts, he needs to earn his money. He can throw a fit about his contract for all I care, he has no leverage, the Skins know it, and they know he'll be here.

Missing OTAs? Whoopee stinkin doo. Until he starts missing mandatory training camp, who the frick cares.
Who cares? Joe Gibbs.

Everyone who said that it won't be an issue, you are right, because Taylor will have a new deal in place before the season starts (mark my words).

Whoever thinks that he has no leverage and that he should honor the contract that he signed, welcome to the year 2007.

I agree here. Taylor abosulutely has leverage. They know it was a down year for him, besides I'm sure his contract has language about being in the Pro Bowl and such. Yes, even though he was an alternate. As far as the new contract goes, I think it will be at the end of the season although I wouldn't be totally shocked to see him get a new deal prior to.

#2 in that lineup? That is impressive although there is probably no rhyme or reason to which picture they were.
