Springs and Taylor miss OTAs

According to Sportstalk 980 Springs and Taylor missed the OTAs today. It looks like the days of having Taylor at a discount are over. They need to resolve this before it becomes a bigger problem. As far as Springs, it should not be a big surprise considering their treatment of him. Hopefully he is just sending a message and does not want to leave.

The time to take care of our most talented player is now. EXTEND SEAN TAYLOR!

Did they say Taylor's absence was salary related?? I would think if he turns in a better year this season (which given the improvements in the LBs and secondary seems like a certainty) he'd have a better bargaining chip for a bigger contract. Springs' absence doesn't surprise me one bit.

They didn't give any detail but since he has been unhappy with his contract starting with the second that the ink dried , it is a pretty safe assumption.

AND he has Rosenhaus as an agent. I remember when he was initially unhappy with the contract, but the whole gun charge thing shut him up.

From KFFL ...

Redskins | Gibbs changes offseason policy
Tue, 8 May 2007 16:02:11 -0700
Joseph White, of The Associated Press, reports <A href="http://www.kffl.com/team/37/nfl">Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs has decided to change the policy he has used for a long time. Gibbs made all of the team activities and practices voluntary until the mandatory minicamp in June. Gibbs said he would try anything to get an improvement from the 5-11 record in 2006. Some of the players who took advantage of the time off include RB Clinton Portis, FS Sean Taylor, WR Santana Moss and WR Brandon Lloyd.

No need to be making it into a big drama when the boss says its ok.

Gibbs said it was okay for players to work out away from Redskins park in March and April, not miss OTAs. I clipped this from an article in the Post yesterday:

Organized Team Activity

The Redskins will begin their first "Organized Team Activity" practices tomorrow, and will conduct weekly sessions culminating with a minicamp June 15-17. The OTAs are technically voluntary, but the team places a premium on them and after Gibbs allowed veterans to work out away from Redskins Park in March and April, the implicit expectation is that everyone will participate.

------------------------------

So I would say Taylor's absence is pretty significant.

I wouldn't be so quick to assume it's a contract issue.

Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs

Does he, or Drew, really think it's a good idea to try to demand a new contract after a relatively lousy season? I know he made his first ProBowl, but that was as an alternate (hell, Romo and Vince Young "made" the ProBowl).
I'd say he as to come out and perform well this season in order to start making demands.

That is all well and good but today's league doesn't work that way. Drafting Landry wasn't exactly a "vote of confidence". He knows that he is one of the most popular players and arguably the best player on the team. He deserved more money and I don't blame him for using his leverage. He certainly won't have more leverage next year when Landry has a year in the system under his belt.

Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs

I'm not going totally against the idea that it's contract related but there is a chance that maybe "grandma is sick" or "Uncle Harvey is in the hospital" or "Dad fell down the stairs" or....or....or....or....

Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs

All of this is speculation based on no facts. Bottom line is that they are not mandatory activities and he doesn't have to be there. I believe in giving the players an actual offseason to recharge their batteries. My opinion is that this is nothing to get twisted about.
