He had one good season out of 4. Wow, I'm really impressed, even in baseball that's a crappy percentage.

When is it time to move on? I'd say 4 seasons is more than enough time to properly evaluate a player.

Last year was a disappointment for Moss because of injuries, but he STILL had a much better season than Gardner, and he also played in a conservative offense.

Gardner has the physical size to be a prototypical receiver. Moss has the exact opposite. But Moss makes the most of it everytime he touches the ball. Gardner might touch the ball but not catch it. How often, or ever, did Gardner make a great catch, and make a play after catching the ball. Never. Sometime he would have an amazing catch, but then go down right away.

Even if Gardner learned to catch, in my opinion that just makes him an average receiver. He just hasnt shown that he wants to make big plays with the ball.

Re: So what if Gardner DOES stay?

I'm one of the few Gardner fans on this site. My reasoning has always been the following. I prefer to look at the future instead of the past. RG's not the fastest but I've always felt he has the skills to be really solid in the NFL. His biggest problem is the dropped balls, but of all the weaknesses to have I think dropped balls is by far the easiest to correct.

But in the end it comes down to this. I would have thought that Gardner was the perfect receiver for Gibbs' system. But if Gibbs doesn't think he can be fixed, or doesn't like his work ethic, or doesn't view him as a "Redskin", or whatever...then I agree that's it time for Rod to move on.

I think anything less than a 3rd rounder is insulting, but the problem is Gardner doesn't want a long-term deal at his current market value. So no team is gonna give up much if anything for a guy they can't even sign. If we can't get a 3rd I would go with the "let him play out his contract year for us" plan, except I think this bridge may have been burned beyond repair. In hindsight I think the Skins made a mistake by allowing Rod to seek a trade. By showing our hand we took away all of our leverage.

I'd still vote to keep him if we can't get a 3rd, but we might not even be able to afford him (thanks $9MDB).

Re: So what if Gardner DOES stay?

Gardner's not a bad reciever, but not a #1 either, but i think if we get into a good system we wont even have a #1. Look how the pats spreat the ball around, with givens, patten, brown, and that other guy who i cant remember. Who would be their #1? Hell ive asked that to pats fans (my in-laws are from RI) and they cant even tell me. It makes the entire secondary play ball, not just two corners covering and one safety offering pass support when you've got a roster full of good (not great) recievers.

I think Gardner would be a good situational #1, and a great guy to put in the slot, especially if we're not going to have him back last year... let him take the Ray Lewis shots across the middle.

Did Gardner break up with you?

I agree with you. Once again the strategic thinking of the FO has been off the mark. Now that it is obvious that Gardner is not a highly valued commodity here in Washington, why should any team cough up a high draft pick to get a guy who will be a free agent after next year. If he does well, he can get a big offer and leave the team that trades for him now. If he sucks, then fans will bitch about giving up a high draft pick.

Yet again, the strategic genius of the FO comes to the fore. Maybe they'll cut Brunell and re-sign Jeff George. He's available, you know...

I agree with you to a certain extent. I'd like to keep him if we can't get a third rounder.

And I do agree we lost leverage in trade negotiations by letting Rod seek a trade. Unfortunately, however, few (if any) teams were going to seek a trade for Gardner. Thus, if you don't want the guy on the team and he doesn't want to be on the team, perhaps the only way to salvage something out of the bad situation is to allow the player to seek a trade. Granted, knowledge of player-team disgruntlement and a desire to seek a trade weakens your bargaining position, but I'm not sure that there's another way to get a draft pick.

Re: So what if Gardner DOES stay?

Maybe if no one wants him, Gibbs will work him into his offensive plans and he'll have something to prove for his last year so that A) we get some value out of him and B) he can make some more money for himself. It might be a win-win situation.
