Brown was a semi-bust his first four years in the league. A 2012 2nd rounder for Tennessee, they let him walk when his rookie contract was up. He went to Buffalo on a one year deal ($1.25M). So, he was a true free agent and Buffalo had no rights to re-sign unless they tagged him. They were tight under the cap and had lots of folks to replace including their No. 1 CB Stephone Gilmore.

So, we just got lucky. The real question is why he lasted so long in free agency after exploding in the Bills defense last year.

So I'm looking back on Perine's game like I did with Kelley week 1, and he definitely missed some opportunities, but there were some head scratchers in the blocking. Here's a blown play by Brandon Scherff:

Scherff pulls.


He has two Defensive players that he could target to help create what looks like it could've been a nice running lane for Perine.


But instead . . .


He knocks Lauvao off his block, freeing a defender.


Who makes the play for a short gain.

So here is the one where Perine left some yards on the field. Listening to Cooley and Riggins this AM, they were saying that he wasn't patient with his runs. I didn't see many instances where he was missing big holes, but I did see what they were talking about with plunging forward without letting his blocks develop / helping to setup his blocks. Here's an example:



After the handoff he begins pressing straight forward too quickly. If he were to hesitate here he can get the LBs to commit one way or another and see where his line opens a lane.


A nice lane opens to the left, but Perine has already pressed right up his lineman's ass and limited his options.


So he plunges forward and is stuffed.



I have a feeling that this is common for young RBs and coachable, as opposed to poor field vision which is not. I'm hoping it's the former rather than the latter.

Will H -- good stuff man. Im not sure we can put it on Perine for the 2nd post breakdown. If the play is a designed run right without him looking to cut back or him having the option to cut back, I cant blame him for running the play how it is supposed to be run.

If its a zone run type play were perine should be looking to cut back, then that is a horse of a different color.

Definitely agree, I have no knowledge of what plays were called and who's responsible to do what. I was basing it off of what Cooley and Riggo were saying, but that may not have been one of the plays they were talking about, but it did look like it.

Having scrutinized all the run plays, Davis was the worst culprit in missing / letting blocks go too quickly. I counted 5 runs in which the defender he was "blocking" was in on the tackle. I think this was the primary reason for the low yards/carry for Perine, but he also didn't break tackles or make people miss. I'm not ready to write him off, but it wasn't a great first start.

Off the top of my head, on his longest run he had a hole you could drive two trucks through side by side. I'll post something later.

Alright so here's the play I was talking about. I'm not sure if this was a designed play or a great decision by Mack.

After the handoff he's approaching the line, but there's nothing there.


So he bounces it to the outside, so was it the play call or a good cut? I honestly think it was designed based on the way Davis is blocking on the edge, but regardless, he sells the inside run well and bounces out to open field.



And just look at all that room, it looks like this could be a break away play, but which way to go? From this angle it looks like he has a defender in the middle and if he follows his block maybe he can get by him to the outside. But look at the other angle


Looks like a beautiful lane to the inside, but . . .


Instead he kind of awkwardly hides behind his blocker until he is surrounded. While I appreciate him trying to follow his blocks, he needs to set his cut off of the block and try to break this open.

That said, watching the play in motion, I don't know that either choice would have been the better one. If he cut inside he'd still have to break a tackle or some ankles, and maybe he can't .

Overall he actually had some good looking plays, they didn't gain as much, but he made some nice cuts. More to come ...

Love these breakdowns Will, thanks for doing these. I'm sure Perrine will get better with time but Mack impressed where he failed against the Raiders. Just having the vision to bounce it outside when there's nothing at the line is smart.
