Re: 2009 Free Agents

And my Suggs idea makes the defense elite (Hayesworth + Suggs + Carter = top 3 pass rush, even given Blache effect), but it also means the best we can hope for in this draft is a third round Center who can push Rabach in camp, and then we wouldn't pick again til the second round next year. So tackle, still an issue in that scenario.

Basically, I don't see an out for Vinny here. Either the defense has depth, or the offense has depth, and we go into the season hoping for great health on one side of the ball or the other. I have no predictive power to recommend one direction over the other now.

Re: 2009 Free Agents

The sad thing is, Blades + McIntosh + Fletcher actually make an above average LB corps. The problem, outside of lacking any competant depth, is that Blache will just send 6+ man blitzes, which won't put any pressure on the QB unless Haynesworth beats his double team right off the snap (in which case, the blitzers were basically not needed anyway).

They should move Chris Wilson to OLB

This idea is actually good one, but I doubt Redskins re thinking of same thing though..

This is just a thought, it's pretty much only logic explanation I could think of why Redskins are not pursuing a LB in free agency: perhaps Blache is planning to use corba packages often for this season? We would not really need a starting LB if we plan to use corba packages often?

yeah i could see this too. Horton/Landry are about the same size as a lot of the FA LB left on the market. But I wonder who plays deep in this scenario... if Moore is really progressing I could see him as the center fielder while Horton/Landry play headhunters further up.

I don't think that's the explanation. Unless we make "cobra" our base defensive package (which would not be smart at all), we're going to need a starting caliber OLB. Even then we'd still want a guy capable of starting on the outside. I think we could still make a play for Crowell.

I agree, but what else explanation is there when Redskins appears are not pursuing anybody on FA? I guess we should wait until draft to see what Redskins' plans are..

Maybe they're happy with Sinclair (I hope not)? Maybe they feel like they can move the 13th pick for multiple 1st day selections and address both tackle and LB? Maybe they bring back Marcus? Maybe they move Chris Wilson to OLB? I have no idea.

There are a number of possible explanations, but IMO overusing the "cobra" package isn't one of them.

"If" we are not going to make any more moves in FA as far as OL/DL with our available cap we should at least bring in Hunter. I Promise this is the last time I bring him up but he's one way to upgrade both O and D at the same time. Hope we have a plan and a little luck in the draft.

Hey 44ever, does my quoting you count as me bringing him up. I know I said I would drop it eventually, but maybe I can just keep quoting you and vice versa, that way neither of us break our promise (would be nice to have him )

Both of these options could really help our d. The only caveat is both Wilson and Marcus are better suited to play WLB for us. I think unless we spend a high draft pick on a stud LB Rocky is the best cover guy in the group and it's always seemed to me our SLB gets stuck in cover situations more often.

... Wilson has perfect size for an NFC East WLB i just wonder how quick he is and whether he can shed blockers. I think he's very well liked by the d coaches too.

I agree. I think Wilson would fit nicely at the Will spot size-wise, and Rocky is definitely the best coverage LB we have. I would prefer that he stay at the Sam spot.
